Applicants must have a doctoral degree in mathematics or similar field prior to the start date as well as experience in undergraduate teaching.
We seek a colleague who shares our commitment to student-centered, inclusive undergraduate education. Our department emphasizes making mathematics accessible to all students and values innovation in teaching, faculty collaboration, cross-disciplinary connections, and inclusive pedagogical practices.
The successful candidate will teach seven courses per academic year, primarily in the calculus sequence, with opportunities to develop courses in the candidate’s specialty. Responsibilities may also include contributing to the mathematics portion of our SMART program, a part of the Integrative Inclusive Science (https://inclusivescience.richmond.edu/) initiative. Directorship responsibilities will include coordinating career skills programming, connecting students with research opportunities, internships, and alumni networks, and assisting with periodic assessment of math courses that contribute to Integrated Focus Areas (https://www.richmond.edu/academics/curriculum/learning-areas.html#integrated-focus-areas) in the general education curriculum. These contributions will support the department’s investment in the Arts & Sciences general education curriculum and connect students to career pathways in mathematics. There will also be opportunities to mentor undergraduate research.
Beyond core responsibilities, teaching faculty are expected to serve on department and university committees and are encouraged to participate in campus-wide initiatives supporting our strategic priorities of academic excellence, belonging and community, and experiential learning. New faculty are paired with mentors and supported by the Faculty Hub (https://facultyhub.richmond.edu/), which provides personalized consultations and workshops for teaching excellence and professional development.
Applicants should apply online at http://jobs.richmond.edu, and submit a curriculum vitae, cover letter, and teaching statement. The teaching statement should articulate the candidate’s philosophy, interest and future development goals as well as involvement in and commitment to inclusive pedagogy. Candidates for this position might be asked, later, to provide the names and contact information for three references who will be asked to submit letters of recommendation. Questions about the application or materials may be directed to Dr. Marcella Torres, Teaching Faculty of Mathematics: Director of Mathematical Instruction for SMART, at [email protected].
