About the Department

Are you passionate about student engagement and empowering student voices? Join our college as the Interim Director of Student Life! This position will be responsible for the overall leadership of student programs and advocacy for student equity. This involves the supervision, development, and management of strategic retention initiatives including student government and leadership, new student orientations, student leadership development programs, student organizations and clubs, student-led activities, overseeing the RTC Associated Student Government (ASG), and commencement. These programs support and maintain a student-centered, inclusive campus culture that contributes to the engagement, learning, and retention of a diverse student population and are in alignment with the vision, mission, and values of the College. 

The Interim Director of Student Life will support the daily operations of the Student Leadership & Programs office and report directly to the Executive Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This position is scheduled to serve as interim director for six months, or through the end of winter quarter 2026. The salary range for this position is $7,781.48 - $7,864.81 monthly. The priority consideration date for applications is October 10, 2025.

Renton Technical College, located southeast of Seattle, has provided quality education in a variety of occupations for over 75 years. Our professional-technical certificate and degree programs offer entry and mid-level training in the areas of allied health, trades and industry, culinary, business, technology, and automotive. Our outstanding college & career pathways program with classes in adult basic education, English as a second language, and GED preparation is available to those who need additional preparation before entering a training program and for those who simply wish to improve their math and English skills. Career Education and apprenticeship degrees round out our offerings.  

Position Duties

  • Provide leadership and administrative oversight for delivery of services ensuring consistency with current, changing, and future needs of students and community. 
  • Provide leadership and cross-campus collaboration on initiatives that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Support and provide leadership with the planning and implementation of the quarterly New Student Orientation program. 
  • Oversee student governance such as Associated Student Government and student representation on tenure committees and college governance councils.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student leaders.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop and monitor budgets; provide direct oversight and stewardship of revenue generated by the Services & Activity fee; organize and lead annual S&A budget process with student government. 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with staff, faculty, and administration to support and encourage high student engagement. 
  • Provide administrative oversight in the formation, sanctioning, and orientation process for student organizations/clubs; expand identity-based student clubs.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for leadership development curriculum, learning outcomes, and assessment of programming and student leaders. 
  • Serve in lead role on the annual commencement committee to coordinate the planning and organization of the ceremony, including arranging the venue and vendor contracts.
  • Collaborate with the Student Success Center in providing supplemental resources via student ambassadors.
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to support student access to resources.
  • Facilitate student engagement in academic recognition programs including Phi Theta Kappa and the All-USA Academic Team. 
  • Set annual performance expectations and assessment methods for each program within areas of responsibility. 
  • Ensure areas of responsibility operate within the policies and procedures of the college and applicable governing agencies.
  • Represent the college at professional and community organizations; participate in college system professional conferences and in-service activities.
  • Assist college administrators with strategic planning efforts and other initiatives, as necessary.
  • Assist in the creation and use of webpages and social media to engage students at Renton Technical College.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively, both orally and in writing, with college employees, departments, and outside agencies.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other related projects and assignments as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical, and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in education, social work, policy, administration, project management, or related field is preferred.
  • Three years of progressive administration and supervisory experience in student affairs or related areas.
  • Demonstrated experience applying student development theory in a co-curricular environment supporting learners.
  • Demonstrated experience in student leadership and activity funds is preferred.
  • Strong event and program planning skills with the ability to cultivate inclusive communities. 
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, think critically and exercise independent judgment required. 
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, specifically experience creating & editing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote universal design and accessibility. Proficiency in (or ability to learn within 6 month of hire) the production of accessibly content, whether print or electronic.
  • Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner, while using tact, discretion, and courtesy.
  • Ability to speak a regionally top spoken language other than English is preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, and Chinese).

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Working hours are generally aligned to business hours, Monday through Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work is required. Work is mostly sedentary in nature, performed in an office environment. Frequent use of a computer and exposure to terminal screens is required. Work and meetings may take place across campus. May drive/travel to trainings, conferences, and/or college events. This is mostly an in-person/on-campus position; remote work may occur as business permits.
