The Role
Join the McArthur River team as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer. In this site-based role you will bring strong experience in geotechnical engineering design and analysis and apply geotechnical principles to support underground mine designs and contribute to the full scope of geotechnical work, from early concept development through detailed design and construction. The position involves close collaboration with other technical disciplines and mine operations and plays an essential part in ensuring safe and effective engineering outcomes.
In this role, you will:
- Provide geotechnical leadership and mentoring to junior members of the mine engineering team.
- Assist the Chief Mine Engineer with geotechnical reviews and risk assessments of the mine plans to ensure that mine layouts and mining sequence are optimized to reduce the risk to safety and production.
- Oversee ground support and backfill designs/standards, and quality control programs.
- Oversee design of underground drifts, chambers and stopes using analytical and numerical tools for stability analysis.
- Lead geotechnical inspections of underground work areas, including geotechnical data collection (MPBX readings, closure stations) and testing (pull tests).
- Be responsible for geotechnical applications, ranging from field mapping, geotechnical core logging, and rock mass characterization to rock stability assessment and ground support design.
- Prepare geotechnical reports and coordinate third-party audits and develop action plans to address recommendations.
- Network with geotechnical staff from other Cameco operations and Corporate.
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in geological, geotechnical or mine engineering
- Four to eight years of underground mining experience, with a focus on ground support engineering and design
- Strong knowledge of rock mechanics and geotechnical fieldwork, including logging, mapping, and rock mass characterization
- Eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS)
- Proficiency in ground support design and 2D/3D geotechnical modelling
- Experience with 3D mine design software (Deswik)
- Excellent communication, technical writing and presentation skills
- Strong organizational and time management abilities
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Work a rotational schedule and commute to site by aircraft
