We are looking for a talented Data Engineer – Senior to join our team specializing in Systems/Information Technology for Cummins Inc. This is a remote position.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways: 

  1. Enable Scalable Data Ingestion and Transformation
    By designing and automating distributed systems, you'll ensure seamless integration of diverse data sources, laying the foundation for reliable analytics and decision-making.
  2. Safeguard Data Quality and Integrity
    Your frameworks for monitoring and troubleshooting will proactively detect and resolve data issues, ensuring stakeholders can trust the data they use.
  3. Establish Robust Data Governance
    You'll implement processes that manage metadata, access, and retention, ensuring compliance, security, and usability for both internal and external users.
  4. Build High-Performance Data Pipelines
    Through expert guidance and hands-on design, you'll create efficient, scalable ETL/ELT pipelines with built-in monitoring and alerting to support real-time and batch processing.
  5. Optimize Database Architecture and Performance
    Your physical data models and indexing strategies will enhance query performance and ensure databases are structured for speed and scalability.
  6. Develop Advanced Storage and Processing Solutions
    Leveraging distributed and cloud platforms, you'll build large-scale data environments that support complex analytics and machine learning workloads.
  7. Automate Repetitive Data Tasks
    By using modern tools and techniques, you'll reduce manual effort, minimize errors, and boost productivity across data preparation and integration workflows.
  8. Accelerate Analytics Initiatives and Mentor Others
    Your use of agile methodologies will ensure timely delivery of critical projects, while your coaching will elevate the skills and confidence of junior team members.

Responsibilities

To be successful in this role you will need the following: 

  1. Strong Systems Requirements Engineering Skills
    You’ll need to translate stakeholder needs into clear, verifiable requirements, manage changes effectively, and maintain traceability across the system lifecycle to ensure alignment and delivery.
  2. Proficiency in ETL and Data Transformation
    Success requires the ability to extract, transform, and load data from diverse sources using the right tools and technologies, ensuring clean, usable data for downstream applications.
  3. Advanced Programming Competence
    You’ll need to write, test, and maintain code using industry standards, version control, and automation tools to meet business and compliance requirements efficiently.
  4. Quality Assurance and Performance Measurement
    Applying QA metrics and SDLC standards will help you assess whether solutions meet intended outcomes and continuously improve product quality.
  5. Clear and Effective Solution Documentation
    You’ll need to document technical solutions and share knowledge clearly with stakeholders to support productivity, collaboration, and long-term maintainability.
  6. Thorough Solution Validation and Testing
    Validating changes and solutions using best practices and SDLC tools ensures that systems function as designed and meet customer expectations.

Qualifications

Education, Licenses, Certifications: 

  • College, university, or equivalent degree in relevant technical discipline, or relevant equivalent experience required. 
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations. 

Experience: 

Intermediate experience in a relevant discipline area is required. 

Knowledge of the latest technologies and trends in data engineering are highly preferred and includes:

  • Familiarity analyzing complex business systems, industry requirements, and/or data regulations
  • Background in processing and managing large data sets
  • Design and development for a Big Data platform using open source and third-party tools
  • SPARK, Scala/Java, Map-Reduce, Hive, Hbase, and Kafka or equivalent college coursework
  • SQL query language
  • Clustered compute cloud-based implementation experience
  • Experience developing applications requiring large file movement for a Cloud-based environment and other data extraction tools and methods from a variety of sources
  • Experience in building analytical solutions 

Intermediate experiences in the following are preferred:

  • Experience with IoT technology 
  • Experience in Agile software development

Additional Responsibilities:

Core Responsibilities Unique to the Role:

  • Collaborate with business and technical teams across functions to interpret data in the context of business processes and integrate holistic data views into analytics tools.
  • Partner closely with IT colleagues to align design decisions, troubleshoot data pipeline and governance issues, and ensure reliable delivery.
  • Translate complex data into meaningful business context by connecting raw data sources to planning and forecasting models, providing insights that support decision making.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with modern data platforms such as Data Lake, Databricks, and Snowflake.
  • Programming proficiency in Python, SQL, Spark SQL, and R, with familiarity in building and maintaining ETL pipelines.
  • Knowledge of data governance practices including metadata management, access controls, and data validation.
  • Familiarity with advanced analytics tools such as Power BI and machine learning methods.
  • Understanding of systems architecture design and implementation for analytics environments.
  • Experience working in Agile environments and using tools such as Jira.
  • Experience integrating data from multiple complex business systems into unified analytics platforms.
  • Familiarity with stakeholder or customer management in analytics delivery.
  • Exposure to additional enterprise data tools such as SSIS or SSAS.
