Position Summary
As a Senior Data Engineer at Redwood Trust, you will play a key role in designing and modernizing our data systems, driving innovation in data integration, performance tuning, and cloud architecture. You’ll be a catalyst for elevating team capability, leading the assessment and improvement of existing platforms, and setting a high bar for database development practices. Responsibilities & Duties
- Solution Architecture & Design
- Lead the design and implementation of scalable, cloud-native data solutions using Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, and Microsoft Fabric.
- Evaluate existing systems, propose modernization strategies, and guide re-architecture efforts to improve performance, resilience, and maintainability.
- Collaborate across business and technology teams to align architecture with evolving business needs.
- Development & Optimization
- Design, develop, and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and ETL/ELT pipelines.
- Develop robust data integration and automation workflows across platforms (on-premises and cloud).
- Oversee best practices for indexing, performance tuning, and advanced query optimization in Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle.
- Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor junior and mid-level developers; provide code reviews, design guidance, and upskilling support.
- Promote a culture of technical excellence, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
- Take ownership of project delivery, balancing long-term strategic goals with urgent production needs.
- Operations & Support
- Support production systems, proactively identify data and performance issues, and drive resolution.
- Ensure availability, reliability, and security across all data environments.
- Document architecture decisions, technical standards, and operational procedures.
Required Experience, Skills, & Competencies
- 7+ years of experience in database engineering, with deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with Azure services, including Azure Data Factory, and ideally Microsoft Fabric.
- Demonstrated experience evaluating legacy systems and modernizing them using cloud-native patterns.
- Strong performance tuning experience, including query profiling, indexing strategies, and resource management.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps principles as applied to data solutions.
- Proven leadership in mentoring teams, leading technical design sessions, and influencing architectural direction.
- Deep understanding of database roles, permissions, and data governance best practices.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments with strong collaboration and documentation habits.
- Mortgage, financial services, or regulatory experience is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
- Azure certifications (e.g., DP-203, AZ-305) are a strong plus.
- Experience with Power BI, Databricks, or other Azure-native analytics platforms.
A reasonable estimate of the total compensation range for this role is $135,000-$165,000. The actual salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, geographic location, training, licensure and certification, and other factors.
