Here’s a Glimpse of the Job
The Assistant Research Scientist assists in conducting research on tropical atmospheric physics and dynamics, with a focus on the organization of tropical convection, the spatial footprint of extreme weather events, and monsoon low-pressure systems. This includes analyzing observational datasets and numerical model outputs from both global and regional models, as well as developing modeling and analysis tools as needed. The role also involves leading the preparation of scientific manuscripts, presenting research findings at conferences, contributing to publications, and supporting the development of grant proposals.
Opportunities to Contribute
Carrying out statistical analysis of observational datasets.
Carries out post-processing and visualization of numerical model output.
Lead preparation of manuscripts based on results obtained from research projects.
Contribute to collaborative manuscripts.
Present research results at conferences.
Submit research proposals as the lead PI for continued support.
Develops new code/algorithms for data analysis.
Collaborating with other scientists/faculty and co-mentoring graduate students as needed.
Qualifications
Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or closely related field, with relevant post-doctoral professional experience in analyzing tropical atmospheric physics and dynamics phenomena, processing simulations from high- resolution weather and climate models, and publishing peer-reviewed articles.
Ability to sit for extended periods (e.g., 6–8 hours/day).
Visual acuity to read computer screens and documents.
A well-qualified candidate for this position will also possess:
3 or more years post-doctoral experience.
3 or more years of experience in analysis and simulation of tropical phenomena.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Established record of peer-reviewed publications.
Proficiency in statistical data analysis and processing of netCDF files.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M University researches the physical processes that influence and determine our climate as well as providing insight into how and why the climate changes. This is an enormous topic and covers spatial scales from atmospheric chemistry, aerosol particles, air pollution, cloud particles, with radii of microns, to large-scale atmospheric waves, with length scales of thousands of kilometers. Topics studied in the department include the physics of convection, climate variability, feedback physics, climate sensitivity, climate extremes, and regional modeling. Variability and predictability of climate on seasonal to millennial timescales, coupled ocean-atmosphere interaction, large-scale dynamics of the atmosphere and the oceans.
