Job Description Summary 

The OASIS Coding RN Nurse Specialist plays a critical role in the success of Aspen Healthcare Services by ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of clinical documentation. This position has a direct impact on the agency’s reimbursements, CMS Star Ratings, and HH Value Based Purchasing measures, influencing quality outcomes, reimbursement integrity, and overall patient satisfaction.

The specialist will review and audit OASIS assessments, perform ICD-10 coding, and collaborate closely with clinicians to strengthen documentation practices. Through attention to detail and a commitment to clinical excellence, this role supports Aspen’s mission of delivering outstanding care and achieving top-tier Star Ratings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough reviews of OASIS Start of Care, Recertification, Resumption, Transfer, and Discharge documentation to ensure precision, compliance, and clinical integrity.

  • Assign accurate ICD-10 coding based on the patient’s clinical and face-to-face documentation and OASIS assessment findings.

  • Ensure that all OASIS submissions reflect the true clinical picture and align with CMS quality measures and Star Rating metrics.

  • Ensure that all OASIS submissions are submitted to iQIES within 30 days
  • Partner with field clinicians to clarify documentation discrepancies and provide feedback to promote continuous improvement.
  • Prepare CMS485 and Post Hospital Orders

  • Monitor regulatory changes, OASIS-E guidance updates, and CMS Star Rating methodologies to maintain best practices.

  • Actively participate in the agency’s QAPI (Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement) initiatives and internal audits.

  • Assist in training and education for new and existing staff on OASIS documentation accuracy, coding, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with active license in Texas (or compact state license).

  • Minimum 3 years of Home Health experience, with at least 2 years in OASIS review and ICD-10 coding.

  • Certification in OASIS (COS-C, HCS-O) preferred.

  • ICD-10 coding certification (HCS-D or equivalent) preferred.

  • In-depth understanding of Medicare Conditions of Participation, Conditions of Payment, CMS guidelines, and quality reporting requirements.

  • Experience with electronic medical record systems (such as Kinnser/WellSky, Forcura)

  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication abilities.

  • Ability to work independently and proactively manage timelines in a remote or hybrid setting.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Full-time, Monday through Friday (flexible business hours)

  • Occasional in-person meetings or training sessions

Physical/Sensory Requirements (with or without the aid of mechanical devices)

Prolonged standing and walking required, with ability to lift up to 50 lbs and move patients. Requires working under some stressful conditions to meet deadlines and patient needs, and to make quick decisions and resource acquisition; meet patient and family individualized psychosocial needs. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
