Salary Plan/Grade:
• Transportation Engineer Tech I: A16 ($40,918.00 - $61,130.00/yearly)
• Transportation Engineer Tech II: A18 ($45,521.00 - $71,055.00/yearly)

Transportation Engineer Tech I:
Performs basic design work and calculations. performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Engineer Tech II:
Performs intermediate design work and calculations; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
The essential duties for the Transportation Engineer Tech I include:
• Performs basic design work.
• Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments.
• Prepares field notes.
• Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
• Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
• Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional duties for a Transport Engineer Tech II include:
• Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians.
• Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
• Performs intermediate design work.
• Prepares environmental documents.
• Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
• Schedules, coordinates and prepares documents for public hearings.
• Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.

Minimum Qualifications for all levels:
Licenses and Certifications: Valid Driver License. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies
Work Experience required for a Transportation Engineer Tech I: No experience required.
Work Experience required for a Transportation Engineer Tech II: 2 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in computer-aided drafting and design systems/programs
• Experience in construction
Required competencies for the Transport Engineer Tech I:
Some knowledge of:
· Basic roadway design
· Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles
· Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures
· Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
· Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments
· Higher mathematics
· Interactive graphic and design information systems
Proficient skill in:
· Writing and revising standards and procedures
· Performing basic design and drafting
· Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
· Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
Ability to:
· Follow verbal and written instructions
Additional competencies for the Transport Engineer Tech II include:

Physical requirements and working conditions for all levels:
• Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
• Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
• Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
