OVERVIEW:
The Plumbing & Maintenance Technician for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis performs skilled plumbing, mechanical, and general building maintenance across the museum’s facility and campus. The technician supports the installation, servicing, and repair of heating/cooling and plumbing systems while providing broad facilities support (e.g., building and MEP maintenance, event setup/teardown, seasonal tasks, and preventive maintenance). The incumbent works closely with departmental colleagues to aid with general facilities support duties.

REPORTS TO: Manager, MEP and Business Controls
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs routine assembly, maintenance, and repairs of valves, pumps, compressors, seals, piping, and related fittings using appropriate fasteners and methods (e.g., bolts, screws, rivets, welding, and brazing). Replaces lavatory fixtures and clears/maintains drains.
2. Uses the Museum’s CMMS to receive/complete work orders, document labor and materials, attach photos/notes, and track asset histories and parts. Assists with inventory of critical spares, tools, and consumables. Executes preventive maintenance (PM) and tasks on building systems and utility equipment including changing filters, belts, and fluids; cleans coils and strainers.
3. Assists with inspections, basic diagnostics, and routine maintenance of building systems including cooling towers, boilers, chillers, air handlers (AHUs), pumps, and hydraulic systems.
4. Monitors interior environmental conditions and makes basic adjustments to building controls for optimized performance.
5. Assists with electrical support under the direction of the Electrical Supervisor including minor wiring, lamp and ballast replacement, and low‑voltage/power wire pulls and terminations.
6. Supports departmental colleagues with event setup and takedown, snow/ice removal, seasonal tasks, and general facilities duties (e.g., ceiling tile replacement, small patch/paint, door hardware adjustments, equipment moves).
7. Maintains shop tools and ensures safe work environments and practices. Engages in regular safety, compliance and customer service tasks. Follows lockout/tagout, confined space, hot work, PPE, and other safety procedures; maintains compliant work areas and documentation.
8. Provides responsive, professional service to internal and external partners; clearly and promptly communicates status, risks, and recommendations.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Two (2) years of professional plumbing and/or HVAC experience or EPA certification (or the educational equivalent).
2. Demonstrated knowledge of plumbing methods and practices, tools and equipment.
3. Experienced in preventative and general building maintenance, and ability to perform tasks from light to heavy manual labor.
4. Familiarity with Johnson Controls Facility Explorer (or similar) preferred.
5. General knowledge of boiler, chiller, and water treatment operations and maintenance required.
6. Must be available to work some nights, weekends and/or holidays depending on departmental need to cover a seven-day operation.
7. Demonstrated Microsoft Office proficiency.
8. Knowledge of restaurant equipment repair including walk-in freezers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and gas cooking equipment preferred.
9. Good written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail required.
