Job Description
Job Title: HEAD CUSTODIAN
Reports To: Principal
Evaluated By: Principal
Supervises: Building Custodians
JOB GOAL: To oversee the school physical plant and grounds to ensure their cleanliness, safety, maintenance, provide a positive learning environment for students and to supervise the night custodial crew.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.
- High School diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education.
- Three years experience in school custodial work.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively with students, parents and staff.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Possess supervisory skills, ability to train, schedule and supervise custodial staff and substitutes.
- Knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in building service work.
- Ability to supervise the night custodians.
- Familiarity with handling of and disposal of hazardous materials, ability to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill, efficiency and safety.
- Ability to supervise and perform light maintenance and repairs (i.e. plumbing, carpentry, painting and landscape maintenance.)
- Ability to insure proper operation of heating and lighting systems.
- Ability to requisition, account for and maintain an inventory for supplies and equipment.
- Ability to perform basic clerical skills to complete required reports in accordance with building/district policies and procedure (i.e. safety, fire drills, vandalism, maintenance, etc.)
- Ability to work independently, prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines while maintaining schedules and attending to details.
- Perform physical requirements, which may include:
- Moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
- Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, bending and twisting.
- Exposure to conditions where heating, cooling and ventilation may be inadequate at times.
- May require exposure to chemicals and the possibility of electrical shock.
- Ability to operate buffers, scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers and other electrical equipment.
- Ability to climb ladders, stretch and bend to perform cleaning, repairs, painting, cleaning roofs, gutters, drains and landscape maintenance.
- Possible exposure to bodily fluids in cleaning due to student illness or injury.
- Ability to plan, organize and submit budget to building principal.
- Plan and manage work projects of outside contractors.
- Such alternative to the above requirements as the School Board or the Administration may deem appropriate and acceptable.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.
- Supervise night custodians and perform essential duties of custodians, sweeping, mopping, buffing, scrubbing, sanitizing and vacuuming.
- Perform light maintenance and repairs, plumbing, carpentry, painting, replace light bulbs, moving furniture and materials, etc.
- Prepare work schedules and insure the work is completed on time and is in accordance with instructions and meets district standards.
- Assume responsibility for the daily opening and closing of school.
- Inspect facilities and equipment to determine needed cleaning repair and maintenance to ensure proper cleanliness and maintenance of facility.
- Plan long term and short term preventative maintenance and cleaning schedules.
- Requisition custodial supplies and equipment and maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Meet with the building principal on a regularly scheduled basis regarding care and cleaning programs for the school building.
- Respond to alarm calls according to building plan; ability to change alarm codes.
- Participate in inservice programs as assigned.
- Know safe procedures for working around asbestos.
- Provide training in safety, use of hazardous materials, use of equipment and custodial methodology.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student and staff information.
- Supervise and perform landscape maintenance around building perimeters (i.e., trim shrubs, bark dust, spray, rock blowing, power wash, window wash, litter removal)
- Ensures for and establishes conditions that allow for the safety of students, staff and the general public (i.e. removal of snow, ice, wet/slippery hallways.)
- Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may seem to be appropriate to the Board or Administration.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION, BONDING AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:
* Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid Card
* Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
* Pre-employment drug screen
* Valid Oregon Driver’s License
* Limited Maintenance Industrial/Electrical (preferred)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/field of vision.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary to be according to current salary schedule agreed upon in the Classified Collective Bargaining Agreement.
EVALUATION:
The performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the building principal.
