Job Description

 

Job Title:              HEAD CUSTODIAN 

Reports To:          Principal

 

Evaluated By:       Principal

 

Supervises:          Building Custodians

 

JOB GOAL: To oversee the school physical plant and grounds to ensure their cleanliness, safety, maintenance, provide a positive learning environment for students and to supervise the night custodial crew.

 

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.

 

  1. High School diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education. 
  1. Three years experience in school custodial work. 
  1. Must be 21 years of age or older. 
  1. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. 
  1. Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively with students, parents and staff. 
  1. Ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  1. Possess supervisory skills, ability to train, schedule and supervise custodial staff and substitutes. 
  1. Knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in building service work. 
  1. Ability to supervise the night custodians. 
  1. Familiarity with handling of and disposal of hazardous materials, ability to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill, efficiency and safety. 
  1. Ability to supervise and perform light maintenance and repairs (i.e. plumbing, carpentry, painting and landscape maintenance.) 
  1. Ability to insure proper operation of heating and lighting systems. 
  1. Ability to requisition, account for and maintain an inventory for supplies and equipment. 
  1. Ability to perform basic clerical skills to complete required reports in accordance with building/district policies and procedure (i.e. safety, fire drills, vandalism, maintenance, etc.) 
  1. Ability to work independently, prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines while maintaining schedules and attending to details. 
  1. Perform physical requirements, which may include:

  2. Moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.

  3. Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, bending and twisting.

  4. Exposure to conditions where heating, cooling and ventilation may be inadequate at times.

  5. May require exposure to chemicals and the possibility of electrical shock.

  6. Ability to operate buffers, scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers and other electrical equipment.

  7. Ability to climb ladders, stretch and bend to perform cleaning, repairs, painting, cleaning roofs, gutters, drains and landscape maintenance.

  8. Possible exposure to bodily fluids in cleaning due to student illness or injury.

  9. Ability to plan, organize and submit budget to building principal.

  10. Plan and manage work projects of outside contractors. 
  1. Such alternative to the above requirements as the School Board or the Administration may deem appropriate and acceptable. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following. Other duties may also be assigned. 

  1. Supervise night custodians and perform essential duties of custodians, sweeping, mopping, buffing, scrubbing, sanitizing and vacuuming. 
  1. Perform light maintenance and repairs, plumbing, carpentry, painting, replace light bulbs, moving furniture and materials, etc. 
  1. Prepare work schedules and insure the work is completed on time and is in accordance with instructions and meets district standards. 
  1. Assume responsibility for the daily opening and closing of school. 
  1. Inspect facilities and equipment to determine needed cleaning repair and maintenance to ensure proper cleanliness and maintenance of facility. 
  1. Plan long term and short term preventative maintenance and cleaning schedules. 
  1. Requisition custodial supplies and equipment and maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment. 
  1. Meet with the building principal on a regularly scheduled basis regarding care and cleaning programs for the school building. 
  1. Respond to alarm calls according to building plan; ability to change alarm codes. 
  1. Participate in inservice programs as assigned. 
  1. Know safe procedures for working around asbestos. 
  1. Provide training in safety, use of hazardous materials, use of equipment and custodial methodology. 
  1. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student and staff information. 
  1. Supervise and perform landscape maintenance around building perimeters (i.e., trim shrubs, bark dust, spray, rock blowing, power wash, window wash, litter removal) 
  1. Ensures for and establishes conditions that allow for the safety of students, staff and the general public (i.e. removal of snow, ice, wet/slippery hallways.) 
  1. Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may seem to be appropriate to the Board or Administration. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION, BONDING AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:

 

* Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid Card

* Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance

* Pre-employment drug screen

* Valid Oregon Driver’s License

* Limited Maintenance Industrial/Electrical (preferred) 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/field of vision.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

 Salary to be according to current salary schedule agreed upon in the Classified Collective Bargaining Agreement.

 

EVALUATION:

 

The performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the building principal.
