Required Qualifications:  As per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. There are no minimum education or experience qualifications for appointment to this title.

Brief Description of Duties:  The Laboratory Animal Caretaker will take care of lab animals in order to help research work.

  • Washes and sterilizes animal caging equipment and supplies, including use of autoclaves, rack washers, tunnel washers, and other specialized equipment;
  • Monitors animals’ health and welfare to detect symptoms of disease or changes in conditions and promptly reports them via facility protocol to veterinary staff;
  • Attends to the physical needs of animals such as feeding, watering, and providing environmental enrichment;
  • Performs minimal housekeeping duties such as sweeping and mopping and laundry.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:  These are full-time positions, 40 hours per week, Tuesday - Saturday OR  Sunday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.  SG 5 Hiring Rate $34,452.  This position includes location pay of $4,000 per year.

The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
