JOB SUMMARY

The Snow Safety Supervisor works closely with the Cat Skiing Manager, the Assistant Director of Mountain Operations and Patrol leadership in the oversight of snow safety operations and training at Monarch Mountain. This position also acts as the supervisor for the Cat Skiing department to ensure that each guest’s guided, backcountry, skiing/riding experience is reasonably safe, positive and personalized. The Snow Safety Supervisor will work with management to evaluate terrain, snow and weather for optimal conditions; ensuring the department is operating within regulations, policies and procedures of the department and company, as well as those of applicable local, state and federal entities, and within departmental budgetary constraints. This individual is an expert skier and guide, knows Monarch’s backcountry terrain, understands snow conditions and impacts, and has a very high awareness of safety and liability. This department works closely with Ski Patrol, Slope Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance, Ticket Sales and Food & Beverage.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The Snow Safety Supervisor responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Be an effective leader within the guidelines of department and company policies, procedures and values, in fulfillment of Monarch’s mission statement to “provide our guests with a quality, personalized mountain experience.”
  •  Ensure all forms, tracking, verifications and necessary documenting are executed and accurately completed in a timely manner.  This includes, though not limited to requests, training, payroll, timekeeping, fiscal responsibilities, disciplinary actions, explosives logs...etc.
  • Assist in the hiring of department A-Team employees.
  • Assist with scheduling department staff for efficient coverage of department functions based on reservations and snowpack.   Adjust to actual requirements as appropriate.
  • Perform daily snow stability assessment, avalanche hazard evaluation, and forecasting for the Monarch Mountain permit area.
  • Responsible for opening or closing terrain based on the above criteria.
  • Coordinate avalanche mitigation control routes, manage control teams, and document all mitigation efforts. 
  • Assist with operations and documentation of weather observations, snow data, explosives use, and terrain skied to provide a daily avalanche forecast and concise terrain use ledger, including SmartMountain and Survey123. 
  • Coordinate training for mitigation, route familiarity and avalanche rescue.
  • Oversee individual explosive training and permitting.
  • Oversee explosive storage, inventory, documentation, and ordering.
  • Oversee the orientation and implementation of the Snow Maintenance/Bootpacking volunteer crew and the disruption roller operations.
  • Assist in providing timely employee feedback and contribute to producing qualitative performance reviews of department A-Team staff.   
  • Be aware of and assist in staying within budgetary constraints; offer input for next season's budget proposal and offer input for departmental capital requests.
  • Work in conjunction with other departments as part of the Monarch team.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of training materials, manuals, checklists and other documents necessary for the success of the department, including the Avalanche Rescue Plan, Snow Safety Plan/Terrain Management Plan and SmartMountain/Survey123 forms as needed
  • Prepare and assist in the oversight of department personnel in the event of an emergency, as instructed by your supervisor.
  • Provide professional solutions and courteous assistance in problem solving for both guests and employees.  
  • Monitor and maintain the inventory and condition of department supplies, properties and facilities, including the maintenance of all avalanche rescue gear: airbag packs, beacons, fill station, and associated tools.
  • Coordinate and maintain open communication with Patrol, Vehicle Maintenance and Administration as needed in the absence of Cat Skiing Manager.
  • Assist with first aid and assist in the evacuation and transportation of injured or sick guests.
  • Learn basic operating and mechanical operations of both Tour Cats.
  • Perform the duties and responsibilities of a Cat Skiing Guide or Professional Ski Patroller whenever necessary.

  • Working knowledge of ski area liabilities as applicable in the state of Colorado.
  • Knowledge of Monarch Mountain backcountry terrain.
  • Must be adept in avalanche forecasting, control, and rescue
  • Must be qualified to operate a snowmobile and have knowledge of snowcat use
  • Must have knowledge in search and rescue procedures.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Age: 21
  • Valid Driver’s License and good, company insurable driving record required.
  • Minimum one-year supervisory experience required, preferably in the area of adventure guiding.
  • Minimum of three years of Ski Patrol and/or backcountry guiding experience required.
  • High School diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
  • Must hold certificates of training in CPR and O.E.C. W.F.R or E.M.T.  
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of explosive use experience.
  • Must possess a Type I explosives permit for avalanche control with the state of Colorado. 
  • Must have clearance from the ATF/E.
  • You must be certified in Pro 1 or Avalanche II, Pro 2, Avalanche III or the equivalent preferred. 
  • Requires the ability to work any day of the week, Saturday through Friday and holidays, and overtime, if necessary, as scheduled.
  • Must be available by phone when off-duty.
  • Requires working at high elevation (up to 12,000’), and with extended exposure to adverse weather conditions, such as severe cold, heavy snowfall, strong winds and intense sun.
  • Must be able to load and unload a chairlift; able to negotiate steep slopes, cliff areas and tight trees in vary in snow conditions including breakable slab, extreme hard pack and bottomless sugar snow on skis and while carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Job requires stretching, bending, climbing, pushing and shoveling snow
  • You must be able to routinely lift moderate to heavy (50+ lbs.) loads.  
  • Possible exposure to bio-hazards (see JHAs).
  • Some travel will be required to attend conferences and meetings.


JOB TYPE: Winter Seasonal, Full and Part Time
