The SARA High Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) is looking for a remarkably talented, motivated, and imaginative Welder / Fabricator to support research and development activities by offering assembly and fabrication support to the DoD, DoE, and their contractors in Colorado Springs, CO. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow and learn with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on long-standing programs and new programs supporting our customers. Our small group will allow the candidate to experience, contribute, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary nature from conception all the way through to production.

 

This Welder / Fabricator will work within the Production Engineering Department consisting of other welders, machinists, engineers, and interns to support rapid prototyping as well as production projects. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to grow, lead, and learn with talented engineers, machinists and technicians on various programs supporting the DoD, DoE, and civilian customers. Our small group will allow the candidate to experience, contribute, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary nature from napkin sketch conception all the way through to the final build.

  

Core Responsibilities:

  • Fabrication, welding, and/or soldering of brass, aluminum, plastic, and steel parts using the necessary tools provided by SARA
  • Ability to follow work instructions and ready engineering drawings
  • Ability to select, cut, layout, clamp, and tack materials before final weld
  • Understands proper machine setup and operation of: welders, saws, grinders, gas torches and various other fabrication tools with fast turnaround and minimal supervision
  • The welder/fabricator is also encouraged to use their creativity to solve fabrication problems to maintain the flow and quality of fabricated parts
  • Machine and tool maintenance along with other tools and equipment
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in agile and changing environment
  • Preventative machine and tool maintenance and shop cleanliness and organization including, but not limited to: keeping tooling organized and stored when not in use, minimizing clutter around work areas, sweeping the floor around work areas, and keeping personal tools stored in the employees’, SARA provided, toolbox

 

Requirements:

  • 0-3 years welding/fabrication industry experience
  • Welding certificate/degree not required but is a plus
  • Able to work solo and within a team with minimal oversight
  • Basic computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office and Email)
  • Use of various measurement and calibration tools including, but not limited to, calipers, micrometers, tape measures, etc.
  • Experience cutting and preparing various materials for machining, welding, and soldering
  • Must be able to pass and maintain ‘pass’ status on OSHA-approved Pulmonary Fitness Test (PFT) in order to wear a respirator for prolonged periods of time, if applicable
  • Occasional travel opportunities, but not required
  • US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD Security Clearance

 

Physical Essential Functions: 

  • Moderate to strenuous physical effort, involving standing, stooping, bending, twisting, reaching, squatting, sitting and use of hand(s) while performing duties, carrying, or lifting 40+ pounds.
  • Working environment is indoor, moderately loud, physical hazards may exist

Pay Range

Salary at SARA is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual’s particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $19 to $24 (hourly USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of SARA’s total compensation package for employees.   Positions are on-site, unless indicated otherwise.
