About the Department

Central San, a progressive public utility, is seeking a Chemist III. This position is a lead role that performs advanced and highly complex laboratory analyses of wastewater, receiving waters, recycled water, and solids from wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal; serves as a laboratory subject matter expert; conducts and develops applied research projects, prepares and analyzes data, and interprets results for the development of reports and related documentation; assists in the implementation of the laboratory quality control and quality assurance program; assists in ensuring compliance with District standard operating procedures operates and maintains complex laboratory equipment; provides training and/or lead direction; and performs related duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Knowledgeofstandardmethodsfortheanalysisofwater,wastewater,anditsbyproducts.
  • Knowledge of current analytical methods and instrumentation commonly used in environmental analysis.
  • Ability to implement quality assurance and control, safety, and chemical hygiene programs.
  • Ability to analyze data and information using established criteria in order to determine consequences and to identify and select alternatives.
  • Ability to train technical staff in new/revised procedures and processes; monitors effectiveness.
  • Ability to present to varied audiences and stakeholders on behalf of the District as a subject matter expert.
  • Ability to make sound, independent decisions within established policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects to meet critical time deadlines.
  • Ability to work on-call, weekends, and holidays.
  • Experience with advanced instrumentation such as; Mass Spectrometry/Gas Chromatography, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry, HPLC, LC-MS-MS instrument, segmented flow analyzer, and other computer-controlled analyzers troubleshooting and repair.
  • Experience in analytical method development
  • Experience utilizing advanced data processing tools and techniques
  • Experience working in various computer programs, including LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System), databases, Microsoft Word, Excel ,and Access.


Position Duties

Education:

Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in chemistry, biology, microbiology, or a related subject.

Experience:

Three (3) years of full-time experience in water, wastewater or laboratory testing, analysis and control including at least two years of performing duties in advanced instrumentation such as; Mass Spectrometry/Gas Chromatography, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry, HPLC, LC-MS-MS instrument troubleshooting and repair preferred. 

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License may be required for some positions.
  • Possession of a Laboratory Analyst Grade III certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association within eighteen months of hire. 

Minimum Qualifications

The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process. Human Resources shall determine the examination steps to be used for this recruitment. The steps may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, practical examination, application screening, and/or oral board examination. One or more of these steps may be used and in any order. At the end of the testing process, candidates passing all of the examination steps will have their names placed on an eligibility list. The list is valid for six months and may be extended up to an additional six months at the request of the hiring department and may be used to fill future vacancies in this classification.

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the examination process. All applicants will be notified of the results of the review process.
 
Successful candidates not currently employed in regular status by the District must pass a pre-employment physical to be considered for appointment.
