Wylie Fire Rescue is seeking motivated individuals to join their ISO ranked team.  The Single Function Paramedic is a non-firefighter position that provides Advanced Life Support (ALS) care and transport of patients in the Wylie Fire-Rescue EMS system. May deliver expanded role emergency medical services such as emergency incident rehabilitation, mobile integrated healthcare, and injury reduction/prevention programs. Required to perform conscientiously, proficiently and as a part of a two-person team at any and all assignments and duties. Responsible for recognizing the importance placed on activities by the public and for tactful and respectful treatment of citizens.

SUPERVISION 

Supervision is provided by a Fire Captain, EMS Program Manager, or Chief officer.

Annual Base pay = $45,489.60

Annual Scheduled OT = $27,556.20

Paramedic Certification Pay=$2,750.00

Total = $75,795.80

Position Duties

  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Provides Advanced Life Support care and transport of patients in the Wylie Fire-Rescue EMS system.
  • Administers emergency medical services to ill/injured persons consistent with the level authorized by the Texas Department of State Health Services certification, established medical protocols, and standard operating procedures.
  • Follows established universal health precautions in the treatment and care of patients.
  • Works indoors and outdoors, subject to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, hazardous conditions, and intermittent exposure to dust, fumes, and loud noise intensity.
  • Maintains good standing with Medical Director.
  • Passes all required tests administered by the Medical Director or his/her agents including annual protocol tests and card course assessments.
  • Participates in physical fitness training per department policy.
  • Conducts public education activities that may include citizens’ fire academy, birthday parties, block parties, station tours, etc.
  • Assists in the development and presentation of training related to EMS and special operations.
  • Learns streets and routes within the city and surrounding areas to include the location of medical facilities to ensure quick response times.
  • Attends scheduled training necessary to maintain EMS certification and all other required certifications.
  • Participates in the testing, cleaning, and maintenance of facilities, grounds, equipment, apparatus.
  • May deliver expanded role emergency medical services such as emergency incident rehabilitation, mobile integrated healthcare, and injury reduction/prevention programs.
  • May be required to work shift and non-shift schedules including weekends, holidays, on-call, and extended hours in emergency, disaster, or other situations influenced by heavy workloads or staffing difficulties.
  • Completes all routine paperwork and reports in a timely manner as required.
  • Studies technical materials on equipment operation to improve or maintain an effective level of performance.  
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours.
  • Responds to requests and inquiries from the public, other department personnel, and other City departments.
  • Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
  • Orientation period is a full 12 months from the date of hire. 
  • Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
  • Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers, and others.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED certificate. 
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess and maintain an unrestricted (except for corrective lenses) Texas Motor Vehicle Operator’s License of at least a class C. Valid Class C Driver's License, with a clear driving record is required. Must have Texas Driver's License within 30 days of hire. 
  • Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management. 
  • Certification as a Paramedic through the Texas Department of State Health Services within 6 months of appointment. 
  • Must maintain Licensed Paramedic, or certified Paramedic certification with the Texas Department of State Health Services, and remain authorized to function as a paramedic by the Medical Director.
  • Possess and maintain a current PHTLS, PALS and ACLS Certification (or equivalent nationally recognized certification)
  • Must complete the Wylie EMS Physical Agility Test which measures agility, strength, balance, coordination, and stamina.
  • Must pass a medical examination administered by a physician selected by the City of Wylie, and be medically fit per City of Wylie Medical Guidelines for Uniformed Fire Personnel.
  • Must meet CMS vaccination and background requirements.
  • Maintain insurability to drive/operate a motor vehicle in the State of Texas.
  • Vision (20/40 in one eye & 20/100 in other eye; correctable to 20/20 and 20/40).
  • Must have a satisfactory previous employment record, if applicable.

Other Qualifications

  • Work is performed in office and field environments. 
  • May be subject to exposure to extreme temperatures, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, toxic fumes, unstable buildings and structures, air and water borne pathogens, infectious diseases, and extreme heat.
  • May be exposed to hostile, angry, or emotional citizens, patients, and business owners.

 

PHYSICAL STRENGTH REQUIRED: 

  • Very high: Exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50-100 pounds frequently, or 20-50 pounds constantly. 
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical requirements such as CPR, lifting and moving of equipment and patients in a variety of environmental conditions. It is preferred that you can swim at the basic survival level. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk.
  • Equipment utilized includes personal computer, copier, mobile data computers, various specialized fire, rescue, and emergency medical response equipment, radio communications equipment, and department apparatus.
  • Unimpaired mobility: Must be able to quickly respond to ambulance, must be able to access patients in difficult terrain, must be able to climb stairs, must be able to work in close and dangerous environments such as damaged vehicles, must be able with partner to carry equipment and patients weighing up to 180 pounds.
