Job Summary:

The Environmental Engineer will manage the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and hourly personnel. Identify needed maintenance and preventive maintenance activities and follow up to ensure completion and viability of WWTP. Order laboratory supplies, WWTP chemicals, and assist with equipment design and selection. Work with production to effectively communicate the state of the plant and improve operations. Lead WPDES and Laboratory compliance inspections and assist in all other environmental audits and inspections. Maintain WWTP certifications required for plant operations. Pursing Solid Waste certification.

Assist in Management, coordination, and improvement of the environmental control, permitting and reporting efforts in wastewater, solid waste, chemical reporting, air, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations in a cost-effective manner. Assist in the Interpretation and dissemination of information regarding pending and developing legislation. Interface with regulatory agencies and local government officials on environmental matters, including releases, spills, and non-compliances.

 

Essential Functions and Primary Responsibilities:

  • Safely Lead the WWTP and Laboratory operations to ensure full compliance with the sites WPDES Permit and Laboratory Certifications.  Coordinate maintenance, contractors, and vendors to maintain availability of critical systems.
  • Communicate with Regulatory authorities regarding WPDES and Laboratory compliance
  • Ensure proper training for all WWTP personnel on plant and laboratory operations.  Coordinate training and testing requirements for state certifications for WWTP personnel.
  • Work directly with mill operations personnel to ensure compliance with all permits and licenses including recordkeeping requirements. 
  • Coordinate and lead various programs such as Radiation Safety (RSO), Hazmat, Hazardous Waste, SWPPP, SPCC, Hazardous Waste, Tank Registration, and others.
  • Write environmental procedures, update safety procedures and written programs as required or requested
  • Participate in internal and external audits.
  • Assist with special environmental projects, as requested by the Environmental Manager.
  • Ensure that the facility is considered by all parties - governmental and public - to be "good, responsible corporate citizens" with respect to treatment of self-generated pollutants.
  • Must follow Ahlstrom’s manufacturing and hygiene processes, procedures and policies, as applicable to the position’s areas of responsibility, in order to meet and maintain the safety, quality, and regulatory compliance requirements for each grade of paper.

 

 Qualifications:

  • Preferred: Environmental or Chemical Engineering Bachelors, or technical degrees
  • Preferred: Previous Environmental experience and/or Wastewater
  • Preferred: Supervisory experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, leadership, mechanically inclined, self-motivated, seeks continual improvement opportunities with a proven track record of successful implementation.
