The Physician Assistant (PA) and/or Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for the care and management of patients seen in the general surgery clinic, the wound care clinic, the hospital, the Emergency Department, Urgent Care, and Nursing Homes. This position operates under all Winona Health policies and procedures as well as state and federal rules and regulations. The position is responsible to deliver the highest level of customer service and productivity for all patients at all times. The position will work closely with all general surgeons, podiatrists and the applicable physician collaborator in order to maintain standards of care as established by Winona Health.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Sees patients in the clinic, hospital, and emergency department settings for the purpose of assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Works under the direction of a collaborating General Surgeon for the care and treatment of patients.
- Attends the daily care coordination meeting in the hospital. Rounds on general surgery patients in the hospital daily (mornings) and documents cares and treatments. Communicates findings to the primary general surgeon.
- Sees patients in the clinics daily; both in General Surgery and the Wound Care Clinic. Patient visits managed by the PA/NP are those patients coming in for follow up surgical care, dressing changes, wound care, laceration repair, and other various minor procedures. Refers patients appropriately to the general surgeon as disease management or diagnostic function exceeds the scope of practice appropriate for a PA/NP.
- Consults with the Emergency and Urgent Care Departments’ physicians/providers regarding the plan of care for potential surgical patients. Writes the admission orders for patients and communicates information regarding admissions to the general surgeon on call.
- Keeps abreast of current drug and treatment interventions for the care of general surgery and wound care patients. Stays abreast of the current wound care treatments collaborating with the WOCN RN on cases as needed.
- Delivers all patient care with the mission, vision, and values of Winona Health in mind and within the limits established by the policies and procedures of Winona Health, and in compliance with scope of practice of a certified physician assistant and in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations.

Skills and Experience:
Post-secondary in related field of study. Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program. Maintains current license under the Minnesota Medical Board. Maintains NCCPA certification. BLS. ACLS. Must maintain a valid license to perform associate level practitioner functions (PA) with the state of MN at all times. Basic computer skills. Outlook. Patient information database (Cerner, EMR, American Data). Familiar with Information Technology Systems.

Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Active participation in continuing education programs. Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a clinical setting is desirable. BLS required. RN License – MN & WI. Must maintain a valid license to perform nurse practitioner functions with the state of Minnesota at all times. Basic computer skills. Outlook. Patient information database (Oracle Cerner, EMR). Familiar with Information Technology Systems.

Physical Demands:
Medium Work
Work activities that require lifting frequently with 25#, occasionally 25-40# and rarely 50#. Work activities that require push/pull forces of with 50# frequently and 100# rarely Medium work activities generally exceed those for light work. Work activities may assume work in a variety of work positions including frequent bending and stooping, frequently squatting, frequent standing and walking. Medium work includes most roles within Winona Health that requires patient handling activities of transfers, rolling, and positioning.
Physical Requirements:
• May lift objects up to 50# rarely, 30-45# occasionally and frequently 10-30#
• May push/pull carts or equipment up to 50# of force frequently and rarely up to 100#
• May push/pull wheelchairs with 30-50# of force with handle height = 36”
• May require moderate to firm gripping or pinching. May use hand tools
• May reach frequently 7-36”, occasionally 6-80”
Transport patients/residents in beds, carts, and wheelchairs. Vertical handle height at 36”. Firm grasping is required. Push/pull force for beds of 35 – 45 lbs., for wheelchairs
Work Environment:
A fast-paced clinical environment with multi-tasking, prioritizing, and frequent interruptions. Continuous interpersonal communication is required with patients, surgeons, managers, staff, volunteers, and the general public.
Required Work Schedule:
Work schedule is generally Monday through Friday. Hours will generally be 0800-1700 with hospital rounding and care coordination duties in the mornings. The afternoon will be spent in the clinic setting seeing patients.
