Job Title – Morning Care Teacher 

FLSA Classification – Non-exempt

Salary Grade - Regular, Part-time, 5 hours/week, $22.50 per hour

Report to – Director of Children’s Programs

Work environment – 1737 NW 26th Ave. Portland, OR 97210

Schedule – Monday through Friday, 7-8am. This is an in-person position. Work is not remote.

Supervision – This position is not responsible for the supervision of other staff members.

Job Description - Summary

This position will plan and implement safe, developmentally appropriate activities with the responsibility of managing a small group of children from 7am-8am at the Friendly House Crawford Building. The Morning Care Teacher will ensure the enrichment, social development, health, and safety of children during the hour before school, and safely walk children to meet with their teachers outside of Chapman Elementary. This job is performed in a classroom at Friendly House, Chapman Elementary School, and the two-block walking route between Friendly House and Chapman. This position will adhere to all applicable childcare regulations. This is a 5-hour per week position.  

Essential functions

  • Independently supervise a group of up to 15 school-age (K-5th grade) children.
  • Independently escort a group of up to 15 school-age children from Friendly House to Chapman Elementary School, ensuring that they are handed off to Chapman staff. 
  • Develop and sustain a morning routine that promotes healthy, culturally responsive child development, positive behavior, and accountability.
  • May be asked to attend occasional meetings with advance notice, and additional hours will be authorized if you are able to attend. 
  • Provide access to games and materials that are appropriate to the developmental needs, interests, and abilities of the children in your care.
  • Ensure classroom space is kept hazard free, clean, and materials are put away at the end of your shift so that the room is ready for the next users.
  • Routinely clean, sanitize, and disinfect surfaces and materials that are frequently touched.
  • Prepare the classroom environment for each day, including collecting materials, lifting, and moving chairs and tables as needed.
  • Under the direction of the Children’s Program Director, help establish and maintain communication with families as needed.
  • Check and respond to email and voicemail in a timely fashion.
  • Track essential attendance information using the Brightwheel app.
  • Immediately notify the Children’s Program Director and/or Site Coordinator of any incidents, accidents, or other health and safety hazards as per the Children’s Programs procedures and policies.
  • Other duties as needed for the success of students during morning care.
  • Promptly notify the Children’s Program Director of any illness or tardiness that could affect parents' ability to drop children off by 7am.
  • Follow policies and procedures to identify each child for whom they are responsible, and relate to them with courtesy, respect, acceptance, and patience.
  • Use and model appropriate, positive language and emotional skills for children.
  • Report suspected abuse, neglect, and exploitation in accordance with Oregon law, using the Friendly House child abuse and reporting form.
  • Have and maintain the required training and experience for the After School Teacher position, including meeting the Oregon Department of Early Learning and Care’s (15 hours per year) requirements. Training hours will be paid over and above the 5 hours per week, are to be completed no later than December 31st each year. 
  • Manage training hours, submit all training certificates of completion to Director, HR manager, and Oregon Registry Online as completed.
  • Commitment to consistent and regular attendance in accordance with FH personnel policies. 

Physical Demands

  • Regular attendance during scheduled work hours.
  • Position requires the ability to occasionally lift 50 pounds, bend, stoop, twist, run, and sit on the floor with children. Job may involve sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and/or pulling.
  • Moderate to frequent exposure to loud noises, outside weather elements, and temperature changes.

Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to comprehend and comply with the Oregon Rules for Certified Childcare Centers and/or school-based childcare.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and act to correct hazards to physical safety, both indoors and outdoors by actively and continuously supervising the assigned group of children, always keeping them within sight and sound.
  • Show good judgement as evidenced by responsible behavior that ensures the children's health and safety.
  • Ability to recognize and respect the uniqueness and potential of all children, their families, and their cultures.
  • Ability to interact with all FH staff, volunteers, other adults, and children in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Ability to adjust and be flexible when daily plans need to be altered due to unforeseen circumstances.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Current first aid and pediatric CPR training certificate (preferred)
  • Current food handler certification (preferred)
  • Current enrollment in DELC’s Central Background Registry (CBR) (preferred)
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
