Job Summary
Battelle’s Cyber Solutions Division is responsible for developing unique embedded security solutions for government and industrial customers. We are currently seeking a Data Science Intern for Summer 2026. This position is onsite in Columbus, OH. As a Data Science Intern, you will work with a diverse group of people from many quantitative disciplines such as physics, computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, systems biology, and mathematics. We work with a variety of data such as microelectronic images and schematics, signal data, text corpuses, ontologies, networks, and simulation results. The application deadline is November 15, 2025 or until filled.
Interest in cybersecurity or tactical autonomy is a must, but experience is not necessary. No matter where you start from, we value your unique perspective and have a culture that supports continual learning, creativity, and risk taking.
As a Data Science Intern, you will work on a variety of data-driven problems using cutting edge machine learning, statistics, and data analytics. Many of our projects require developing new methods, and the ideal candidate will be comfortable learning outside of their expertise, conceptualizing a problem, and thinking deeply about data and what it can tell us. We welcome your unique academic and commercial experience in machine learning, statistics, mathematical modeling, data mining and munging, network analysis, natural language processing, data analytics, or physical system simulation. However, the most important skills are an enthusiasm for learning and data-driven problem solving.
Responsibilities
Intern activities may include some or all of the following:
- Develop and maintain data processing and analysis solutions. Leverage Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing techniques to support technology assessments and technical reporting.
- Aid in the design and implementation of machine learning and data engineering techniques applied to cyber security problems, supply chain security, internet of things (IoT), and commercial platforms.
- Assist in the iterative design and counter design process of tactical simulations
- Improve existing techniques and devise new techniques to solve security data problems
- Use Generative AI agents to solve unique data problems such as planning and coordination
- Identify and articulate strengths and weaknesses of solutions, conclusions, and problem approaches during technical discussions
- Learn and become fluent in the details of security related domains to devise data driven solutions
Key Qualifications
- Must be currently pursuing bachelor’s or master's degree in a field which demonstrates analytical sophistication (Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Quantitative Social Sciences, Computational Biology or similar)
- Must have experience developing in Python, through classwork, commercial experience, or similar
- Excitement about learning new technical subject area and curiosity about cybersecurity problems
- Communication and teamwork skills
- Must be a U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain government security clearance
