Description
Under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) adheres to established nursing care standards and performs duties that support nursing functions. The CNA assists in patient admission, transfer, and discharge and performs routine tasks in patient care.
- Takes temperature, pulse respiration, and blood pressure.
- Collects specimens.
- Assists in moving patients in and out of stretchers and wheelchairs.
- Maintains the cleanliness of various instruments and equipment, such as wheelchairs, sinks & suction canisters.
- Keeps patient areas clean and orderly; makes beds; replaces soiled linen; straightens bedside tables.
- Replenish the supply cart.
- Immediately notify RN of abnormal vital signs or deviation from patient norm.
- Assists patient with toileting, ADL, etc.
- Performs vital signs on patients as ordered.
- Maintains all patient care areas.
- Completes competency for Accu-Chek testing.
- To demonstrate proper technique in finger stick for BS testing.
- To demonstrate proper use of the Accu-Chek Advantage.
- To demonstrate proper technique, use of equipment, and accuracy in obtaining:
- temperature (oral, axillary)
- pulse (radial)
- respirations
- blood pressure
- To assist with connecting monitors to patients in Pain Management.
- To assist with the admission and discharge of patients according to SHOLA policy and procedure:
- Assisted ambulation.
- Assisted to and from the stretcher.
- Assisted from stretcher to wheelchair.
- Discharging the patient in a wheelchair.
- Assisted from wheelchair to car.
- To demonstrate proper technique in changing patient gowns with an IV.
- To clean, make, and transport stretchers to areas of need.
- To keep the bedside cubicles in Pain Management stocked.
- To obtain stock from the storeroom.
- To know the location of emergency equipment:
- crash cart
- ventilator
- Ambu bags
- airway box
- portable and stationary oxygen
- suction
- electronic blood pressure machine
- To summarize steps used to prevent injury in the care of combative patients.
- To assist with maintaining patient safety.
- Provide and assist with safe, therapeutic care considering the patient's age, growth, development, and specific needs.
- Cost-effectively maintains adequate supplies and equipment in appropriate working conditions.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and quiet environment for patients and other personnel.
- Always provides patient privacy and confidentiality and maintains patient dignity.
- Demonstrates ability to perform in emergencies for the safety and well-being of the patient under the direction of a registered nurse or physician.
- Possesses a working knowledge of equipment used in Pain Management.
- Assists in maintaining the care and cleanliness of supplies and equipment—cost-effectively maintains adequate supplies and equipment in appropriate working conditions with proper documentation.
- Report damaged instruments to the Pain Management Clinical Services Director and follow proper procedures for damaged instruments and/or equipment.

Requirements
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: At least two (2) years of experience in a hospital or medical environment.
Licenses/Certificates: Nursing Assistant certification by LDH and BLS certification are required.
Special Skills: Knowledge of basic nursing techniques and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively. Must be able to work 5/8's.
