About the Department
(Anticipated Hiring Range: $54,680 - $57,449/annually)
Positions assigned to this class manage state land projects, current planning projects and task. This position will manage project cases, assist in overseeing intern workload and quality of work. Make independent decisions when reviewing and inspecting proposed projects. Research, coordinate meetings, and present cases at the Board of Adjustment, Planning Commission and City Council.
Position Duties
The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essentials duties may not change, specific work tasks may vary over time depending on the City's needs.
- Case project management to include but not limited to Pre-applications, Rezones, Conditional Use Permits, Preliminary/Final Plats, Design Reviews, Variances, and Special Projects.
- Special project management, i.e. zoning ordinance assistance, MyGov coordination and testing, GIS linking of historical documents.
- Research, analyze and interpret various land use information data and trends, prepare written reports.
- Counter assistance and calls, general email inquiries.
- Plan Review, Business Licenses Review, and conduct planning field inspections.
- Coordinate meetings and present cases at the Board of Adjustment, Planning Commission and City Council.
- Confer with other Planning staff, builders, contractors, engineers and citizens as required.
- Assist in coordinating and overseeing the work and workflow of planning interns.
- May supervise and/or delegate assignments to lower-level planning staff.
- Support the City’s policies, goals and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Graduation from a college or university accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban, Environmental or Regional Planning, Geography, Design or a closely related field.

Knowledge
- Basic knowledge of city policies and procedures.
- Planning and Zoning principles, engineering terminology, comprehensive planning, plan review, comprehensive planning and customer service principles.
- Managing multiple projects.
- Conduct development plan review.
- Research and analysis methods and techniques and communicating complex concepts and processes.
- Work independently or part or a team, making independent decisions and recommendations.
- File and record management.
Skills
- Presentation skills.
- Operating a personal computer utilizing standard software such as Microsoft Office and office equipment; proficient typing.
- Data entry and use of electronic databases associated with planning.
- Maintaining appropriate records and compiling information for reports.
- Facilitation and presentation of information to individuals and groups.
Pre-employment Requirements
Candidates who are selected for appointment may be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation. Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a vehicle in Arizona or meet the transportation needs of the position.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
