The Talent Manager turns B&Q’s Talent & Performance strategy into action. They make sure we have strong, diverse pipelines and clear pathways that help colleagues grow and succeed. By leading core talent activities, from succession and reviews to goal-setting and performance check-ins to apprenticeships and career pathways, they give leaders the insight they need to make good people decisions and have great conversations. The role focuses on building leadership depth, developing future capability, and creating opportunities that help colleagues build rewarding, flexible careers at B&Q.

What's the job?:

1. Talent Reviews & Succession

  • Operationalise our talent and organisational review, succession planning and goal-setting cycles, turning these into insight and actions that strengthen succession pipeline, build future capability and drive performance through clear goals
  • Enable healthy, diverse succession pipelines.
  • Partner with the Management Capability Manager to ensure leadership development supports in-role and future readiness at all management levels.
  • Manage and evolve the coaching offer for senior leaders and the executive pipeline.


2. Capability Insight & Planning

  • Use a variety of reviews to define current and future capability needs across the business.
  • Provide clear recommendations on actions, including build/buy decisions, to support long-term capability.
  • Equip Learning teams with insight to design impactful leadership and colleague development programmes.


3. Career Pathways

  • Define and maintain career pathways across key business areas.
  • Enable a more flexible “squiggly career” culture that gives colleagues clarity on skills, experiences and routes to progress.
  • Partner with the Management Capability Manager to ensure aligned leadership development and talent development.


4. Apprenticeships & Early Careers

  • Lead the apprenticeship strategy and delivery, ensuring high quality, learner satisfaction and clear ROI.
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to use apprenticeships as a source of external pipeline.
  • Partner with functions to create pathways and entry programmes that create opportunities for early careers talent (e.g. HR Pathway programme).
  • Oversee provider relationships to ensure delivery meets B&Q’s standards, builds the right skills, and supports progression opportunities

5. Data, Insight & Continuous Improvement

  • Own talent data, reporting and analytics to provide a clear view of B&Q’s talent landscape.
  • Track impact measures for key talent and performance activity, sharing insight with the Talent & Learning Lead.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, innovation and impact across talent processes

6. Team Leadership & Contribution

  • Lead, coach and develop the Talent team with clear accountabilities and performance expectations.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive and high-performing team culture.
  • Support career development and progression within the team, building future capability for the function.
  • Play an active role as part of the Talent & Learning leadership team, role-modelling B&Q’s behaviours and contributing to shared team priorities.
What we need::
  • Proven experience in talent management, leadership development, or organisational development in a large, multi-site business.
  • Track record of translating strategic direction into operational delivery with measurable outcomes.
  • Strong data analysis skills with the ability to translate insight into action.
  • Experience managing senior stakeholder relationships and influencing adoption of new processes.
  • Expertise in designing and implementing cyclical talent processes.
  • Knowledge of apprenticeship strategy, levy management, and provider relationships (desirable)
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Leadership experience managing and developing a specialist team.
