FLSA Status:               Non-Exempt  

Stipend Amount:        Stipend of $4,000 total for the duration of the program(equivalent to approximately $19.05/hour. This does not include lodging) 

Hours Per Week:         21 Hours

Location:                     Atlanta, GA (Must be local to location of office)

JOB DESCRIPTION 

Department Overview

The Institute for Capacity Building (ICB) plays a key role in supporting UNCF’s mission by delivering strategic initiatives that strengthen Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). ICB focuses on institutional effectiveness, competitiveness, and long-term viability through a resiliency-based approach. The department fosters collaboration, innovation, and capacity-building across member institutions.

 

Job Overview:

The Policy and Strategy Intern will support ICB’s strategic priorities by contributing to research, policy development, and program innovation. This role offers hands-on experience in higher education strategy and policy analysis, with opportunities to engage in meaningful work that supports the transformation of HBCUs.

ABOUT UNCF  

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has been an engine of educational achievement for more than 80 years. UNCF’s mission is to build a robust and nationally recognized pipeline of HBCU students who, because of UNCF support, become highly qualified college graduates. In addition, UNCF ensures that its member institutions remain respected models of best practices in moving students to and through college. Since its inception in 1944, UNCF has raised over $6 billion in private support, distributed scholarships to help students attend school, and enabled more than 500,000 scholars and low-income students to graduate from UNCF’s member historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and launch professional careers. UNCF is committed to closing the educational attainment gap by increasing postsecondary access and success for student groups, particularly low-income and first-generation students.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 

  • Support new programs and concepts that build institutional capacity at HBCUs
  • Conduct background research on topics related to education, history, sociology, and leadership
  • Draft memoranda, policy briefs, and research documents for internal and external audiences
  • Collaborate with the ICB team to develop and codify new initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory responsibilities. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

 

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher required.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset
  • Entrepreneurial and self-starting approach to tasks
  • Demonstrated interest in supporting marginalized student communities (e.g., first-generation, low-income, students of color, students with disabilities)


LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

There will be several opportunities for meeting and trainings as well as a team retreat.
