Student Worker – Transcript Editor

Purpose/Objective of the Role:
- The Department of Journalism and Communication is seeking a highly motivated, responsible, and creative undergraduate student to serve as the Editor of the student newspaper, The Transcript.
- This internship offers a unique leadership opportunity for a student with a passion for journalism, storytelling, and campus engagement.
- The Editor is responsible for overseeing the editorial direction, content production, and day-to-day operations of the student newspaper.
- This position provides valuable experience in newsroom management, editorial planning, team leadership, and multimedia journalism.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a team of student writers, editors, photographers, and designers.
- Plan and oversee content for digital editions of the student newspaper.
- Edit and review articles for clarity, accuracy, style, and adherence to journalistic standards.
- Assign stories, manage deadlines, and coordinate weekly editorial meetings.
- Collaborate with Transcript faculty advisor on best practices and publication goals.
- Ensure the newspaper reflects diverse voices and perspectives across campus.
- Maintain active communication with student contributors and campus stakeholders.
- Manage the newspaper’s digital presence, including website updates and social media outreach. Uphold ethical journalism practices and encourage inclusive reporting.
Required Qualifications/Skills:
- Currently enrolled OWU undergraduate student in good academic standing, preferably majoring in communication, English, or a related field.
- Previously enrolled in Fundamentals of Journalism (COMM 110) experience in student media or journalism (writing, editing, photography, layout).
- Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage deadlines, lead a team, and work independently.
- Familiarity with digital publishing tools, AP Style, and social media platforms.
- Commitment to journalistic integrity, free expression, and inclusive storytelling.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop), Canva, or similar design tools.
- Knowledge of content management systems (e.g., WordPress).
- Interest in or experience with multimedia storytelling (video, audio, podcasts).
