Position Summary:

The VP of Total Rewards and HR Operations will lead and greatly enhance the strategy, development, implementation and communication of Apellis’ compensation, benefits and HR operations function, ensuring each program drives and reinforces the company culture, performance and individual performance. The goal is to enhance the company’s culture by creating programs and approaches that attract, retain and motivate a growing employee population. Working closely with the CPO, executive team and Board of Director’s Compensation Committee Chair and members, this VP will lead a team of 12.

This role is for an innovative, collaborative, positive and communicative leader who is strategic but also hands-on. This leader should be passionate about the business and its people, and be able to leverage their compensation and benefits expertise, combined with strong people leadership, to help drive the organization and continue to enhance its culture. The focus on impact and how to simplify processes and approaches to drive the best outcomes. This leader will challenge and do things differently, that make sense for the business.

With their deep business orientation, this leader should bring biopharma public company experience in compensation issues including base pay, short- and long-term equity incentive programs, all aspects of executive compensation and disclosures, sales compensation; executive benefits, including non-qualified and equity plans and health and welfare benefits expertise. Workday systems experience is highly preferred.

This leader will be a strong partner to the CPO and Compensation Committee Chair.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Enhance and administer a comprehensive total rewards strategy that aligns employee rewards with Apellis’ corporate values and enables the organization to attract, reward and retain talent while elevating the culture.
  • Work closely with the Chief People Officer on compensation analyses, program design and preparation of materials for the Compensation Committee.
  • Work closely with the Compensation Committee Chair.
  • Set and oversee Apellis’ annual compensation cycle including design of review templates, manager/employee communication and training of process and end-to-end process management.
  • Working closely with the Talent Acquisition team assist in the development of market competitive compensation packages that enable Apellis to attract high caliber talent while managing internal equity.
  • Enhance a job architecture that effectively defines robust criteria to consistently level roles across the organization using robust survey data and market insights.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight into the benefits function.
  • Reassess and refine the benefits offerings, ensuring they are valued balanced with costs/impact.
  • Ensure effective and efficient management of programs and partners (negotiate favorable renewals, manage open enrollment processes, robust employee communication plans, wellness and health education initiatives, etc.).
  • Collaborate with external benefits and compensation advisors to stay abreast of emerging trends and proactively put forward recommendations that enable Apellis to be competitive and resourceful in our total rewards investments.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal and regulatory requirements, maintaining a proactive approach with new and anticipated changes to legislation and regulation, which may impact organizational processes and objectives.
  • Develop and deliver communications that help employees understand and appreciate the value of their total compensation, inclusive of benefits, base, bonus, equity, programs related to holistic wellbeing, etc.
  • Ensure management and execution of the 401k plan, including all compliance and fiduciary activities.
  • Working closely with Payroll and IT to collaborate and ensure seamless integration of compensation and benefits into Apellis systems.
  • Assess and refine HR operations processes so they focus on greater employee engagement vs ease of HR administration.

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 14+ years of progressive experience in compensation, benefits, and HR systems/applications.

Experience:

  • Experience in Biotech / Pharma / Life Sciences is required.
  • Must have experience in compensation (executive and broad based), equity plans and preparation of compensation committee materials.
  • Deep experience in executive compensation is required.
  • Prior experience leading Total Rewards and/or Compensation is required.
  • Experience leading HR projects (e.g., system implementations, compensation, and benefit cycles, etc.) with strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to complete a broad range of related action items.
  • Track record of leading and elevating a team’s impact.
  • Understanding of SEC, SOX, and tax requirements as well as all other government regulations that apply to compensation base and incentive compensation is required.
  • Must be a strong analytical skills and detail orientation.

Travel Requirements:

  • Ability to travel/work at the Company's headquarters 3 days a week
