One of our key initiatives, Read Charlotte, is a community literacy program that brings together educators, community partners, and families to improve children's reading skills from birth to third grade.
HOW YOU’LL ADVANCE OUR MISSION | POSITION OVERVIEW
The Communications Coordinator will collaborate closely with the Communications Manager to support Read Charlotte's communications and public engagement efforts. This position primarily focuses on designing a variety of high-quality visual content, including social media graphics, flyers, digital toolkits, and event materials. The ideal candidate should have 2–4 years of experience in graphic design, communications, or marketing. They should be a creative thinker who enjoys using design to inspire action and is comfortable working both collaboratively and independently.
YOUR UNIQUE IMPACT | ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Graphic design
- Design engaging print and digital materials that help our community connect with Read Charlotte’s mission.
- Create and adapt templates for flyers, one-pagers, infographics, social media, toolkits, presentations, and more
- Produce animated or infographic-style videos that visually communicate complex data and concepts
- Maintain brand consistency across all visual communications
- Support layout and design for reports, newsletters, and website content
- Collaborate with Read Charlotte team on new initiative branding as needed
Communications support
- Support Read Charlotte’s overall communications and public engagement work.
- Assist in writing and editing content for print and digital materials
- With the Communications Manager, execute the organization’s social media strategy
- Organize and manage digital assets and design files
- Support marketing campaigns, partner events, and storytelling efforts
- Coordinate with the Communications Manager for an annual event that inspires community support and showcases Read Charlotte's mission.
Familiarity with tools/programs/sites
- Canva and/or other design programs
- Experience in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop is a plus!

- Microsoft Office/Google Workspace
Requirements
WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR SUCCESS: QUALIFICATIONS
- A bachelor's degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, or related field is preferred.
- One to three years of professional experience in a communications-related role.
- Proven track record and a career history that demonstrates the ability to succeed in complex operating environments with multiple constituencies.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal relationship skills and experience managing “up” and “across.”
- Practice the highest level of honesty, integrity, and discretion.
- Have strong problem-solving, analytical, and people skills.
