The City of Cedar Rapids is looking for a Civil Rights Coordinator to help ensure the City provides fair and equal access to programs, services, and activities. This role supports compliance with civil rights and accessibility requirements, assists with complaint intake and resolution, and work with departments to promote equity and inclusion. The Civil Rights Coordinator serves as a resource for staff and the community, helping to make sure services are accessible to all residents.

About the Position:
Performs a variety of general to complex administrative duties and civil rights support services including intake coordination and compliance.

The City of Cedar Rapids does not offer sponsorship for employment authorization.

Position Duties

Administrative Coordination

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the public and outside agencies, providing professional customer service and managing inquiries received in person, by phone, mail, and email.
  • Oversee office operations including correspondence, certified/regular mail, financial transactions (accounts payable/receivable, invoices, payments), and procurement of supplies in compliance with city regulations.
  • Prepare and edit departmental communications such as reports, brochures, newsletters, social media, website updates, and official meeting minutes.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation through multiple office case management systems.
Intake Coordination
  • Guide individuals through the complaint process by providing materials, conducting intake interviews, and reviewing information for jurisdictional requirements.
  • Draft complaint summaries, related correspondence, and communicate findings or jurisdictional issues with supervisors and colleagues.
  • Support investigative work by ensuring accurate documentation and participating in training and development opportunities.
Compliance & Outreach
  • Monitor settlement agreements to ensure compliance, update case management systems, and process closure documentation.
  • Provide training and outreach to community organizations and the public on the Fair Housing Act and Commission programs, while maintaining accurate compliance-related website content.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate’s degree in Business Administration or a related field, and one (1) to (3) years of administrative support and customer service experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g., one year of relevant experience may substitute for one year of education). 
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and Adobe software
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations
Desired Qualifications
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in a legal office or in office coordination
  • Paralegal certification or other related professional certification
