POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Site Manager of Adult Day Services and the Office Manager, the Lead Driver plays a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Adult Day Service transportation program. This position is responsible for driving a minibus, van, or lightweight vehicle to transport clients and participants with disabilities, while also supporting and guiding the driver team to maintain safety, compliance, and high-quality service. In addition to transportation duties, the Lead Driver provides support in the care and facilitation of daily cognitive and stimulating activities for clients, helping to promote engagement, independence, and well-being within the Adult Day Services department.
Chicago Commons provides services that help seniors and adults with disabilities maintain their independence and quality of life while remaining in their homes. Our Adult Day Service (ADS) program provides a professional care setting in which seniors and adults with disabilities are transported to our center to receive individualized care in a community-based group setting. Our Adult Day Service center is located in Bronzeville and provides daily onsite care for seniors and adults with disabilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Safely operate minibuses, vans, or lightweight vehicles to transport participants.
- Assist passengers on and off the vehicle in a safe and courteous manner, including those using medical equipment.
- Provide a high level of customer service to clients enrolled in the program.
- Secures wheelchairs to restraining devices to stabilize wheelchairs during transport
- Note visible changes in clients' physical or mental health regularly transported; communicate this information to appropriate personnel for follow-up. Document unusual behavior.
- help provide personal care such as toileting, bathing, eating, transfers, and grooming to Adult Day Service clients.
- Assist with observing clients and report activities to the appropriate staff.
- Complete client forms and document information in files. Participate in team meetings and in-service educational training.
- Ensure participants are received by caregivers or authorized persons.
- Assist with scheduling bus maintenance to ensure vehicles remain in safe working condition.
- Support the driver team with route coverage as needed.
- Assist with scheduling bus cleaning and maintaining vehicle cleanliness standards.
- Monitor bus registration sticker due dates and ensure timely renewals.
- Monitor bus safety inspection due dates and coordinate compliance.
- Conduct weekly vehicle inspections and document findings.
- Report maintenance and safety needs to the ADS Director promptly.
- Maintain accurate logs of passengers, mileage, fuel, and maintenance.
- Communicate effectively with base station, drivers, and ADS staff using radios or other devices.
- Participate in staff meetings and required training.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Adult Day Services.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
- 5 years of experience working with seniors or adults with disabilities.
- 5 years of driving experience
EDUCATION:
- High School diploma/GED.
- CPR certification is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
There are no unusual environmental conditions other than inclement weather and inappropriate driving of other vehicles.

Frequent operation of a word-processing system is required, including the ability to read, produce, and transmit data effectively. The role involves frequent standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, and occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Employees should be capable of lifting and/or moving items weighing up to 20 pounds on occasion. Additionally, specific vision requirements include the ability to see close range.
