Job Summary

Under the direction of the Manager, Radar Systems Engineering, the Radar Systems Engineer participates in the planning, organizing, leading, and performing work involved in the areas of system requirements, specifications, acceptance tests, performance analysis, configuration control, modification, design enhancement and deployment of Surveillance systems and projects. Provides technical expertise on hardware and software issues related to CNS systems including, but not limited to Surveillance.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensure system safety is maintained within the ATC radar system domain.
  • Responsible for planning, specifying, testing, evaluating, and procurement of ATC radar systems, components and related technology.
  • Provide expert advice and support to surveillance team, stakeholders, and other business units related to the ATC radar systems.
  • Work in partnership with management, software architect, system engineers and governance groups in requirements management, analysis, design, integration, testing, and life cycle support of radar and companion systems.
  • Perform analysis of problem reports and determine root cause, development of work around, recommendations and/or implementation of solutions.
  • Create, review, management, and execution of test plans, suites, cases, and scripts related to radar systems.
  • Create, analyze, review, and manage system requirements.
  • Provide accurate and timely response to critical service and project requests.
  • Review and perform land use analysis related to radar systems.
  • Participate in projects, procurement assessments of varying complexity.
  • Participate in working groups related to the ATC radar surveillance domain.
  • Act as a coach / mentor to summer or coop students, monitoring their progress and supporting their development. 

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Graduation from a recognized university with a degree in engineering with eligibility for certification as a Professional Engineer in Canada.

Experience:

  • Experience in the development of specifications, standards, and/or procedures.
  • Experience in the design, development, procurement, implementation and life-cycle management of radar systems or electronic systems incorporating RF, Microwave, Signal Processor, or embedded computer.
  • Experience in working with a multidisciplinary team of system development professionals with emphasis on analysis, design, user experience (UX), standards, integration, testing, and implementation.
  • Experience in using electronic measuring instruments such as protocol analyzers, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Experience in working in agile daily stand-up, iteration, and PI planning

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge in the theory of operation of radar systems, and their associated subsystems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, standards, practices, and technology in the field of systems engineering.
  • Knowledge in the theory, principles, techniques, and practices in the field of electronics, radio propagation, electromagnetic interference, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMI/EMC).
  • Knowledge of Canadian and International, organizations, regulations and standards related to the operation of radars used for air traffic control.
  • Knowledge of primary and secondary radar issues, and resolutions.
  • Knowledge of NAV CANADA organization, business practices and principles
  • Knowledge of root cause analysis related to issues to software, systems, and process.

Abilities:

  • Ability to plan, coordinate, conduct, and evaluate proposals related to feasibility studies, design concepts, testing, implementation and life-cycle management of safety critical systems and software for radar systems.
  • Ability to create, document and execute test plans, cases, and scripts for software and system changes.
  • Ability to install, configure, debug and support embedded computer based systems.
  • Ability to write and evaluate specifications, technical reports, proposals, presentations, and safety reports.
  • Ability to have discussions with internal/external stakeholders, management, vendors/consults, and industry related to projects, tasks, and products.
  • Ability in the use of root cause analysis related to issues to software, systems, and process.

Working conditions:

  • Travel required occasional both nationally and internationally based on need.  
  • The position required a Canadian Driver’s license.
  • This position is a hybrid position with a minimum – 3 day(s) per week on site in Ottawa and is not eligible for remote work arrangement.  
  • Typically conducted in a standard open office environment using computer based tools.  
  • Frequent on-site visits are required in the Ottawa area where the Engineering Test Systems reporting office are located.
  • Assignments are technically significant and require periods of concentration, however work can be scheduled and deadlines reasonably achieved. 
  • Moderate level of multi-tasking is required since there are many simultaneous active assignments. 
  • An occasional amount of field work is required, as is travel away from the Engineer’s home and headquarters area.
  • Field work may involve extreme weather conditions and travel by various modes of transportation.
