About the Department

The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform a broad range of generalized and specialized functions to support the maintenance and repair of City facilities, lands, and infrastructure. The work is performed under the general supervision and direction of the Assistant Facilities Superintendent, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, with possible exposure to a variety of terrains, weather conditions, hazardous materials, and airborne pathogens.

Work Week: Typically, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Performs facility maintenance including daily operational checks, and preventative maintenance and responding to service requests   
  • Operates, services, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance tasks on building related equipment, pumps, boilers, and mechanical systems including HVAC;
  • Manage access control including programming fobs, tracking and managing physical inventory of keys, and installing door hardware;
  • Troubleshoots and performs minor repairs of electrical and lighting systems including lighting fixtures and ballasts;
  • Utilize building management systems to monitor building systems and operations;
  • Maintain and update records in Computerized Maintenance Management System;
  • Provides snow removal for City facilities using mechanical equipment and shovel;
  • Completes basic maintenance tasks including painting, cleaning, plumbing, moving furniture and equipment and office modifications;
  • Contacts, coordinates, and monitors the work of vendors and contracted service providers hired to perform work on city owned buildings, grounds, and equipment;
  • Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required;
  • Operates and maintains light equipment and trucks, including pickups, trailers, utility vehicles, scissor lifts, and other related equipment;
  • Operates a variety of construction hand and power tools and equipment;
  • Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the work day;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner. Provides outstanding customer service to City of Bozeman residents, employees, and customers;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

Position Duties

  • High School Diploma or GED; and
  • Some (1-3 years) of experience in facility operation and maintenance; and
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Substantial knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used to do minor facilities repairs and maintenance;
  • Substantial knowledge of the safe and proper use of basic hand tools, power tools, and other related equipment;
  • Substantial knowledge of the maintenance and operation of related light duty equipment;
  • Substantial knowledge of basic safety principles and practices;
  • Some knowledge of building mechanical equipment and controls;
  • Some knowledge of basic principles and practices of building construction, maintenance, and repair activities;
  • Some knowledge of the techniques, methods, and materials related to facility maintenance;
  • Some knowledge of construction, mechanical, and electrical drawings;
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of times with exposure to varying weather conditions;
  • Ability to efficiently operate related light and medium duty equipment, hand and power tools, and other equipment;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use independent judgment within prescribed standards and procedures;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;

Other Qualifications

  • Must possess a current valid Driver’s License and have the ability to obtain a Montana Driver’s License within six months of employment;
