The University of Southern Maine is hiring for an Assistant Director of Marketing. The Assistant Director of Marketing supports the University’s enrollment, marketing, and brand objectives by overseeing the execution of marketing projects, campaigns, and operations. Working under the direction, strategies, and high-level planning across audiences set by the AVP, this role translates strategies into actionable plans, managing timelines, creative production, and campaign and project delivery.

The Assistant Director of Marketing ensures that all projects — from large-scale campaigns to individual print or digital requests — are executed effectively, on time, and on brand. This role provides creative direction in collaboration with the AVP, a content writer, a multimedia staff member, and the graphic designer and manages project follow-up with internal stakeholders. The Marketing Manager supervises staff members and coordinates with external vendors and agencies to ensure smooth execution of campaigns.

This position will also take on additional projects across the full Marketing & Strategic Communications Department when they require multiple staff members across the department working together on deliverables. 

Pay and Benefits: This full-time position offers an annual salary up to $71,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off (13 holidays, vacation, and sick leave), health, dental, and vision insurance, life and disability coverage, tuition benefits for employees and eligible dependents, and a 403(b) retirement plan with 10% employer contribution. Location: Primarily based on the Portland campus, with occasional travel to the Gorham and Lewiston campuses. Flexible and potential remote work arrangements (up to one day per week post-probation) are negotiable.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, project management, or related field.
  • At least 3–5 years of professional experience in marketing project management, creative production, or related roles.
  • Higher ed experience working with admissions marketing required.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Supervisory or team leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Creative design background, having worked with university/educational brands a bonus. 
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across teams and with external vendors. Familiarity with vendors such as Niche, Encoura, EAB, etc a bonus. 
  • Familiarity with marketing tools such as CRM/email platforms (e.g., Salesforce Marketing Cloud), Asana (or other task/project management software), and analytics tools a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • You are a strong planner and project manager with a creative streak.
  • You are organized with a strong attention and eye for the details. 
  • You can balance multiple projects at the same time, and can make decisions in a fast-paced environment, working across multiple projects and deadlines. 
  • You are a good communicator – able to lead meetings and compile and present digestible and impactful reports.
  • You have experience in project managing and communicating needs within a task management system and other organizational tools. 
  • You are a strong collaborator and will enjoy the network and expertise provided by working with outside agencies, optimizing their resources. You can proactively wield multiple agencies in unison towards meeting our campaign goals, knowing when to step in with constructive feedback and make tough decisions. 
  • You enjoy working towards a plan to drive brainstorms and collaborations – bringing out the best across team member’s work and skill sets and are confident in giving constructive feedback, running edit rounds, etc.
