 About the job: 

The Park Maintenance Worker 1 - Trails position is responsible for performing trails and natural area maintenance, repair and renovations and construction on park grounds.


The Park Maintenance Worker 1 is the entry level in the Park Maintenance Worker classification. The Park Maintenance Worker 1 is distinguished from the Park Maintenance Worker 2 by performing primarily routine operations duties and the Park Maintenance Worker 2 leads staff, projects, or programs.    


 A day in the life: 

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:  

  • Maintains and/or constructs both soft and hard surface trails in urban and mid-country environments. 
  • Performs snow removal and ice control duties. 
  • Implement planned trail management plans, including trail corridor management, brush removal, trail construction and garbage removal along trails and in natural areas.
  • Controls noxious weeds and help restores native areas in and around trail corridors, projects, and other areas as assigned.
  • Assists with fuels reduction projects in undeveloped natural areas by using power equipment including chainsaws and wood chippers.
  • Operates tractors, skid-steers, trucks and trailers, ATV's, and snow plows.
  • Maintains equipment in clean and safe condition; operate equipment safely at all times. 
  • Promotes safe conditions in or along all trails, natural areas, parks with open spaces, and park facilities. Cooperatively participates in work of crews while in progress. 
  • Assists with set up and operation of special events. 
  • Cooperatively participates in work of crews while in progress; provide guidance and training in procedures and techniques as needed to ensure quality and quantity of work meets standards.
  • Assists with the application of pesticides and fertilizers. 
  • Undertakes and performs tasks for trail maintenance, new construction, or trail restoration projects.
  • Contributes to a positive and constructive working environment.  
  • Aligns with the District's goals of advancing diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Maintains and repairs landscaped areas, including turf, trees, shrubs and irrigation.
  • Communicates openly and constructively with supervisor and district employees to enable efficient decision-making and positive morale.
  • Promotes safe conditions in all park facilities.
  • Provides assistance and guidance to public park users as needed.
  • Acts as a Mandatory Reporter; reports incidents of child abuse/neglect.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Work Schedule: 

40-hour work week may include weekend & holiday shifts. Typical workday: 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM  

Requirements

What you'll need for success:

Strong Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices and methods used in trail operations, construction, and maintenance, park maintenance repair and construction, and forestry;
  • Equipment and practices involved in park grounds, wetlands, landscape or building maintenance;
  • Safety rules and identification of safety hazards; and
  •  Maintenance and safe operation of powered equipment and hand tools.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing, including by phone, e-mail or in person to successfully complete assigned projects;
  • Work independently while also able to work cooperatively with others;
  • Safely operate powered equipment and hand tools including blowers, chainsaws, ATVs, drills, and trucks; 
  • Effectively understand and follow oral and written instructions; 
  • Exercise initiative and good judgment; and
  • Establish and maintain effective, cooperative and respectful working relationships with all contacts

What we're looking for:

Education, Experience, and Training:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent; AND 
  2. Experience in trails maintenance, horticulture, natural areas maintenance, or construction preferred; OR 
  3. Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training.  

Licenses and certifications:

  1. Possession of, or ability to obtain valid Oregon driver’s license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.
  2. Some positions may require possession of or ability to obtain within one year of hire a valid Public Pesticide Applicator’s license. 

 

Supervision Received:  

Works under the supervision of a Supervisor. Carries out work independently, but work and decisions are typically reviewed prior to final execution.


Supervision Exercised:  

Limited direction is a responsibility of this position when on-site leadership and guidance of part-time and seasonal personnel is needed.


Working Conditions:  

The following are working conditions, including environmental and physical demands, required for this classification.

  • Duties are performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather including heat, cold, humidity, wind, snow, and rain.
  • Daily standing and walking over uneven terrain, such as parks and trails with up/down inclines, paved and unpaved surfaces for sustained periods of time.
  • Safety equipment, including shoes, gloves, reflective vests and eye protection are required.
  • Daily operation of a motor vehicle on public roadways.
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals, vibration and fumes.

  • Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and constant use of hands and arms and may require overhead reaching.
  • Occasional lifting, moving, dragging, pushing and carrying of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds unassisted).
  • Occasional crouching, crawling, bending, kneeling, climbing or balancing.
  • May require working for emergency call-outs or snow removal during off duty hours including some holidays.  

 

Selection Process:
