The Scientific Research Specialist position provides critical analytical support for the Maine Soil Testing Service and Analytical lab complex, which is one of the primary public service laboratories for the University of Maine. The lab provides a range of analytical services to approximately 3000 individual commercial and research customers each year. Full-time, regular position, 40 hours per week, 5 days per week. Normal daily work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position pays $$19.61/hour, or applicable transfer rate in accordance with the ACSUM collective bargaining agreement.
Essential duties include:
- Operation/maintenance of Flow Injection and Combustion analysis systems.
- Maintain data integrity and general quality control for routine testing.
- Train and supervise student workers assisting in routine sample analysis.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Typically has the education associated with a bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of related laboratory research experience
- Experience with routine laboratory procedures and operation
- Experience with routine laboratory quality control
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Word
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
Preferred:
- Proficiency with flow injection, combustion analysis, or ICP analysis
- Background in routine soil testing methods and procedures
