Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Under direction of the school site principal the Education Specialist provides resource support services to students with special needs in the general education setting. Assists the general education teacher in modification and differentiation of instruction for students with special needs. Works collaboratively with general education teacher to provide instruction in the classroom. Assists Para-Educators in implementing instruction to students to meet goals/objectives of the child’s IEP.
MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES FOR PRE SCHOOL
1. To participate in the Special Education preschool team as it receives referrals and determines appropriate assessments and placements for preschool children with special needs.
2. Assist preschool teachers in determining behaviors which may warrant Special Education services.
3. Serve as case manager for children whose primary placement is a mainstreamed setting.
4. Assist preschool teachers in accommodating preschoolers with special needs within the constraints of their program.
5. Provide observational data for assessments and reevaluation of children in preschools, daycare setting or at home.
6. Provide on-site consultation regarding: program content, teaching strategies, behavior management techniques, and materials.
7. Provide group in-service training on successful mainstreaming at the preschool level.
8. Provide support to parents of mainstreamed preschoolers.
9. Participate in planning parent training sessions.
10. Maintain close contact with parents of special needs children regarding their progress and parental concerns.
12. Institute and monitor home programs to special needs students when necessary to ensure progress within a mainstreamed setting.
13. Monitor the progress of preschool students whose primary placement is a private preschool.
14. Maintain regularly scheduled contact with preschool teacher of identified students.
15. Monitor IEP goal implementation for identified students.
16. Coordinate DIS, preschool, and home programs for special needs students.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate various equipment;
• Seeing to read a variety of materials;
• Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations;
• Sitting or standing for extended periods of time;
• Walking, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, bending over, grasping, reaching overhead, pushing, pulling and moving, lifting and/or carrying 0-50 pounds to waist height.
HAZARDS:
• Potential for contact with bodily fluids, blood-borne pathogens, and communicable diseases;
• Exposure to anti-social behavior;
• Driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions.
TECHNOLOGY STANDARD
Ravenswood City School District requires employees to have technology skills. E-mail, standard software usage and data entry are employment requirements. Advanced technical skills will be obtained through on-job training as needed.
