Retail Cost Accountant
Job Overview: The Retail Cost Accountant is responsible for managing and analyzing cost-related financial data within the retail business. This role ensures accurate cost accounting, inventory valuation, and margin analysis while supporting financial planning and decision-making. The Retail Cost Accountant works closely with operations, procurement, and finance teams to maintain strong internal controls and optimize profitability.
Reports to: CFO
Job Description: • Maintain and monitor cost accounting systems, processes, and records specific to retail operations. • Prepare and analyze cost reports, profit margins, and variances using advanced Excel tools. • Partner with store managers and operations teams to track shrinkage, pricing, and cost of goods sold (COGS). • Ensure accurate valuation of inventory in compliance with GAAP and company policies. • Analyze purchase price variances, vendor costs, and product margins. • Provide cost-related insights into management for pricing strategies and operational improvements. • Develop and implement cost control procedures to improve efficiency and profitability.
Minimum Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred but not required). • 2–4 years of experience in cost accounting, preferably in retail or consumer goods. • Strong knowledge of GAAP and cost accounting principles. • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, formulas, and data analysis tools are a must). • Experience with accounting/ERP software (e.g., QuickBooks, AX, Oracle, SAP). • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. • Ability to work independently and collaborate across multiple departments. • High attention to detail and accuracy.
Skills & Competencies: • Strong understanding of retail inventory management and valuation. • Ability to analyze complex financial data and present clear insights. • Familiarity with POS systems, supply chain processes, and vendor cost management. • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and integrity in all financial matters.
Work Environment: • Office-based with occasional visits to retail store locations and/or warehouses. • Fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
