We are seeking a strategic and experienced leader preferably with a Juris Doctorare to join the Pediatrix team in the role of AVP of Medical Professional Claims & Liability. In this high-impact role, you will oversee claims investigations, risk analysis, and resolution strategies while collaborating with clinicians, legal counsel, and insurers. The AVP also drives policy development, educates stakeholders on risk management, and supports a culture of safety and accountability across the organization. This position reports to the EVP, General Counsel.

Responsibilities:

The AVP, Medical Professional Claims and Liability Management leads the Company’s efforts in managing malpractice claims and reducing liability exposure. 

 

Leadership & Strategy

  • Direct the activities and functions of the Medical Professional Claims and Liability Team.
  • Establish policies and procedures governing team operations.
  • Develop and oversee claims handling strategies and the overall claims management program.

Claims Management

  • Manage and monitor malpractice claims filed against the Company, affiliated practices, and clinicians.
  • Oversee investigations of adverse occurrences and evaluate events that could result in claims.
  • Interact with third-party administrators (TPAs), claims adjusters, insurance carriers, and defense counsel.
  • Attend mediations and trials as necessary.
  • Establish and monitor reserves in collaboration with the Finance Department.
  • Direct quarterly claims meetings.
  • Communicate claim status and resolution recommendations to involved parties and Company Executives.

Risk Assessment & Mitigation

  • Identify potential risks and implement strategies to minimize or eliminate liability.
  • Oversee analysis of incident reports, loss runs, and malpractice background reviews to evaluate exposure.
  • Consult with clinicians on identified risks and corrective actions.

Engagement & Communication

  • Lead development and presentation of risk management topics for Company Executives and affiliated clinicians.
  • Participate in new employee orientation to introduce risk management philosophies and programs.
Qualifications:

Education/Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree –Juris Doctor from an accredited law school required. 
  • 5-10 years of experience in a law firm or healthcare entity legal department with responsibility for the defense of medical malpractice claims/cases. 

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Experience with investigations, claims management, and medical terminology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Software: 

  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
