General Description and Classification Standards:
Permit, inspect and maintain compliance of food service establishments in accordance with the City of Atlanta Grease Ordinance. Inspects each facility in the designated area to ensure proper operations and maintenance of fats, oil and grease removal devices and to ensure proper disposal of the contents. This is a field position and will require some heavy lifting. Could be the only position in this specialty in a work group or could be part of a general or specialized work team.
Supervision Received:
Works under general supervision of the Pollution Control Monitor Senior in the Fats, Oil and Grease Division. Works independently or with similarly skilled workers with responsibility for completion of assigned task.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.
- Inspects each facility in the designated area several times per year to ensure proper design, operations, and maintenance of Fat, Oil, & Grease (FOG) removal devices and to ensure proper disposal of FOG.
- Plan and conduct inspection of commercial wastewater pretreatment systems for compliance with the city ordinance.
- Perform measurements and calculations to determine that the pretreatment system is in compliance with the 25% rule as required by city ordinance.
- Accurately delivers all commercial wastewater discharge permits within assigned area.
- Provide information and directives concerning the proper installation and maintenance of commercial pretreatment systems.
- Provides directives concerning actions required to achieve and maintain compliance with the city ordinance.
- Prepares and enters inspection records, prepares reports, notice of violations and other correspondence.
- Ensures the environmental code enforcement of the Grease Ordinance from a field operatives’ perspective by issuing citations and being prepared to testify in court.
- May perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience - High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of experience in industrial waste inspections, wastewater monitoring, and/or compliance activities.
Licensures and Certifications - Valid State of Georgia Driver's License required. GACE (Georgia Association of Code Enforcement Officials) certification or the ability to obtain one. Wastewater Laboratory Analyst certification and/or Wastewater Operator certification are desirable. Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission Level II, National Green Infrastructure Certification Program, Citation book, Code of Enforcement certification/badge, Pollution certification, Environmental Science certification.
Preferred Requirements – Associate’s degree in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, or one of the Earth Sciences and five (5) years of experience in industrial waste inspections, wastewater monitoring, and/or compliance activities.
Work Environment:
Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities are requirements to perform the job successfully. Typical environmental conditions with the job.
Lifting Requirements:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
