About the Department

These duties involve responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of trucks and various types of road maintenance and construction equipment.   Employees are also required to closely monitor the operation of the equipment, report necessary repairs to the Shop Manager and perform routine maintenance including lubrication and maintaining liquid levels.  Employees in this class may be assigned to perform work in any of the several specialized skilled areas such as automotive repair, road and bridge construction and repair, and in highway sign installation and maintenance.  Work is performed in the office and in the field.   The work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures.   Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinate employees.  Employees may be required to perform manual road and bridge work as needed.   A Motor Equipment Operator II does related work as assigned.

Position Duties

  • Operates medium and heavy trucks in connection with the hauling and placing of material for road and bridge construction and repair;
  • Operates various snow and ice control equipment and vehicles;
  • Operates a truck to transport workers, tools and other equipment;
  • Services, inspects and submits proper records for assigned vehicle and maintains assigned vehicle in clean condition;
  • Loads and unloads trucks;
  • Operates medium and heavy construction and maintenance equipment such as rollers, loaders, brooms, aerial bucket trucks, backhoes, hydroseeders, tractor mowers, and other road paving equipment;
  • Uses a variety of hand tools and power tools such as shovels, rakes, picks, chain saws, drills, circular saws, and jackhammers in performance of duties;
  • Performs a variety of manual tasks such as cutting trees, road patching, bridge washing/scraping/ painting, work zone traffic control and snow shoveling;
  • May supervise subordinate personnel; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the operation of bucket loaders, snow plow trucks, four-wheel drive snow blowers, rollers, tractors, ten-wheel dump trucks and street cleaning equipment; good knowledge of County geography; good manual dexterity; ability to service and make simple repairs to assigned equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to properly and safely supervise subordinate employees; ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds; ability to stand and walk for extended periods; ability to frequently stoop, bend, and kneel; ability to perform sustained and vigorous activities in a variety of environments, temperatures, weather conditions and exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and construction materials; mechanical aptitude; willingness to respond to emergencies and work under adverse weather conditions; diligence and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Training/Education 
  • None required.
General experience 
  • One year of experience in the operation of medium automotive equipment[1][2].
  • Two years of experience in the operation of light automotive equipment[3].
Supervisory experience 
  • N.A.
License/ Certification 
  • Possession of a valid New York State Class B commercial motor vehicle driver’s license with an endorsement for tank.

Part-time service will be given prorated credit toward experience requirements.  
[1] Medium automotive equipment, for the purposes of these minimum qualifications, includes single-axle dump trucks, flatbed trucks, snowplows and water tank trucks, tandem-axle dump trucks, larger asphalt rollers, hydroseeding equipment, loaders, backhoes, or small to medium bulldozers.
[2] Specialized/heavy equipment is also acceptable. For the purpose of these minimum qualifications this includes: motor grader, wheeled or track excavator, large loaders, semi tractor-trailer, live-bottom material tractor-trailer, road widener machine, large bulldozers, Athey force-feed loader, backhoe/loader, aerial hydraulic bucket truck, tractor-trailer lowboy equipment transport unit, or bus.
[3] Light automotive equipment, for the purposes of these minimum qualifications, includes pickup truck snowplows, small rollers, small wheel loaders, 1-ton utility trucks, 40-HP or larger tractor mowers, small flatbed or dump trucks, chain saws, power tools, or forklift.

Other Qualifications

  1. Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  2. Appropriate licensure, with necessary endorsements, must be maintained throughout employment (NYS Transportation Law § 140 (2)(c)).  
  3. A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required.
  4. Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes.
