About the Department
These duties involve responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of trucks and various types of road maintenance and construction equipment. Employees are also required to closely monitor the operation of the equipment, report necessary repairs to the Shop Manager and perform routine maintenance including lubrication and maintaining liquid levels. Employees in this class may be assigned to perform work in any of the several specialized skilled areas such as automotive repair, road and bridge construction and repair, and in highway sign installation and maintenance. Work is performed in the office and in the field. The work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures. Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinate employees. Employees may be required to perform manual road and bridge work as needed. A Motor Equipment Operator II does related work as assigned.
Position Duties
- Operates medium and heavy trucks in connection with the hauling and placing of material for road and bridge construction and repair;
- Operates various snow and ice control equipment and vehicles;
- Operates a truck to transport workers, tools and other equipment;
- Services, inspects and submits proper records for assigned vehicle and maintains assigned vehicle in clean condition;
- Loads and unloads trucks;
- Operates medium and heavy construction and maintenance equipment such as rollers, loaders, brooms, aerial bucket trucks, backhoes, hydroseeders, tractor mowers, and other road paving equipment;
- Uses a variety of hand tools and power tools such as shovels, rakes, picks, chain saws, drills, circular saws, and jackhammers in performance of duties;
- Performs a variety of manual tasks such as cutting trees, road patching, bridge washing/scraping/ painting, work zone traffic control and snow shoveling;
- May supervise subordinate personnel; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Part-time service will be given prorated credit toward experience requirements.
Other Qualifications
- Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Appropriate licensure, with necessary endorsements, must be maintained throughout employment (NYS Transportation Law § 140 (2)(c)).
- A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required.
- Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes.
