TITLE: Nurse Intern
DEPARTMENT: Med Surg
POSITION STATUS/HOURS: Part-time position, every third weekend starting January 2026 – May 2026. During the summer months of June 2026-August 2026 the position will be full-time, 36 hours/week. Continued part-time position of every third weekend starting mid-August 2026 through December 2026.
Intern may choose day or night weekend shifts during the school year; shifts will be rotating days/nights during the summer months.
Shifts are 5:45a.m.-6:15p.m. or 5:45p.m.-6:15a.m.
Non-benefit eligible position.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Nurse Intern (NI) will provide direct patient care, gain hands on experience, and enhance assessment skills. Direct supervision is defined as immediately available to continually coordinate, direct, and inspect the practice of the NI.
If offered a RN position to remain employed post-graduation, the NI can continue in this role for up to 6 months from the date of graduation unless they are unsuccessful in passing the licensure exam two times. After successfully passing the licensure exam, the NI would be transitioned to the Registered Nurse role.
DUTIES INCLUDE (NOT EXHAUSTIVE LIST):
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse
*Communicates patient information to physician, nurse, or other health care professionals
*Explains nursing techniques and procedures
*Prioritizes patient care responsibilities
*Completes annual equipment competencies as scheduled
*Gives rationale for clinical decisions; engages in critical thinking
*Demonstrates ability to adapt/respond to unexpected or emergency situations
*Develops/implements patient teaching
*Documentation of patient care on electronic medical record
*Inpatient, Observation, Swingbed, Monitor Bed, Outpatient, SDS patient care
*Participates in bedside patient report
*Completes or assists CNA with ADLs
*Barcode medication administration
*IV therapy (Peripheral)
*Monitors labs and diagnostic procedures
*Verify and co-sign blood transfusions
*Maintain isolation precautions
*Completes appropriate documentation when transferring patient to surgery
*Completes appropriate transfer documentation - Interfacility
*Patient education upon discharge – Patient Care Instructions
*Demonstrates leadership skills
*Compliance with health and safety standards and guidelines
*Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Associate Degree or Bachelor Degree Nursing student who is entering their last year of nursing curriculum or is a graduate of a nursing program. Must be in good standing in their nursing schooling throughout employment (class grade of C or higher).
