The Data Science Team at Husch Blackwell delivers solutions to legal and operational problems using a wide range of mathematical and computational methods. Our projects are highly collaborative and often executed on tight timelines.
The Senior Manager - Data Science and AI is responsible for developing and deploying the firm’s capabilities and assets for data science and AI. This position leads a team of Data Scientists, ensuring the team delivers strategic and business value while fostering a productive and humane environment that supports team engagement, professional growth, and collaboration. The Senior Manager will partner with the firm’s Principal Data Scientist to ensure that projects are staffed and executed most appropriately and will be responsible for delivering and demonstrating business value from DS and AI projects. Essential functions include:
- Supervising data scientists and other members of the data science team.
- Foster professional growth and skill development in their direct reports
- Delegate tasks and responsibilities effectively, ensuring optimal workload distribution and project efficiency.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and set clear goals for direct reports.
- Facilitate team engagement through regular communication, recognition, and support.
- Address personnel issues, resolve conflicts, and promote a collaborative, inclusive team environment.
- Identify training and development opportunities to enhance team capabilities and keep skills current with industry trends.
- Provide critical strategic direction on Data Science project deliverables.
- Collaborate with Director of Data Science & AI and firm leadership and provide analysis and insight on data science deliverables.
- Interpret technical deliverables for non-technical personnel providing understanding of results and outcomes
- Guide the Data Science team’s use of statistics, machine learning, software engineering, and other mathematical techniques to deliver data-driven insights for our internal stakeholders and external clients.
- Develop, maintain, and advocate-for best practices in Data Science and data systems across the organization.
- Facilitate the development of data science skills and knowledge within the team and throughout IT.
- Establish and maintain quality vendor relationships.
- Lead the planning, deployment, documentation, and management throughout all stages of the data science project lifecycle.
- Rationalize and approve projects based on strategic firm needs and requirements.
- Ensure long-term flexibility and maintainability of Data Science systems.
- Assessing service/performance risks and planning for contingencies.
- Collaborate with firm leadership for strategic and tactical decision making, planning, and execution of the firm’s AI strategy.
- Ensure that the firm stays at the vanguard of AI governance practices through research, policy advisement, and participation in the AI governance effort.
- Will participate in AI governance and oversight with assigned roles in the firm’s AI governance program.
- Maintain awareness of the evolving ethical concerns and potential risks of machine learning and data science.
- Effectively advocate for solutions that minimize exposure to risk for both the firm and our clients.
- Provide thought leadership and maintain a thorough working knowledge of relevant legal, business, and AI research.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in related field; Industry certifications or graduate degree preferred.
- 7 years of management experience in related field required, preferably in a professional services environment.
- Ability to manage a large capital and expense budget.
- Extensive experience with machine learning, BI, and statistical modeling projects
- Extensive SDLC and Software engineering experience.
- Experience working in a cloud environment (IaaS and PaaS), such as Microsoft Azure and/or Amazon Web Services.
- Must have extraordinary communication skills for working with technical and not technical stakeholders.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee may be required to be stationary for prolonged periods, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary, be able to inspect and observe information on a computer screen at least 80% of the time, and, on occasion, have the ability to lift and carry 25-35 pounds.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience. The exact compensation will vary based on skills, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. The expected compensation ranges for this position in various states and jurisdictions are as follows:
State of Illinois: $130,000 - $252,000
State of Massachusetts: $144,000 - $275,000
State of Maryland: $139,000 - $211,000
State of Minnesota: $144,000 - $238,000
Jersey City, NJ: $156,000 - $283,000
State of New York: $134,000 - $289,000
State of Vermont: $142,000 - $273,000
Washington, D.C.: $185,000 - $273,000
The above salaries do not include a discretionary bonus, however bonus opportunities are non-guaranteed, and are dependent upon individual and firm performance.
