About the Department

Hiring range is negotiable between $51,653 and $67,139 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience.

Performs difficult semiskilled work supervising and participating in the maintenance activities of the municipal golf course.   
 
Responsibilities include turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, budget/forecasting, financial management, member relations, scheduling/maintenance or irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. The Golf Course Superintendent works to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic with open communication and respect for themselves, pass-holders, guests and the property. Work is performed under the general supervision of the General Manager and reviewed through results of turf conditions, observation of duties, and general feedback.  

Position Duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Coordinates and supervises personnel engaged in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of the golf course; maintains personnel time records.
  • Keeps payroll records and credit card procurement receipts.
  • Inspects greens, teeing areas, fairways, and golf course facilities to ensure proper care and maintenance.
  • Apply insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides for proper maintenance of turf care of golf course. 
  • Identifies turf problems and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Provides oversight of the mowing, weeding, aeration, fertilization and other general soil and turf care of the golf course.
  • Seeds and sods turf areas when needed.
  • Maintains irrigation system. 
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and parts necessary for maintenance of golf course and equipment.
  • Prepares golf course budget.
  • Keeps records of grounds and equipment maintenance.
  • Ensures propagation, planting, and transplanting of trees and shrubs for beautification and maintenance of the golf course.
  • Ensures compliance with all safety policies and practices in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of management and maintenance of greens, fairways and roughs.
  • Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in golf course construction and maintenance work.
  • Skill in recruiting, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel.
  • Interpersonal skills to resolve conflicts and work with supervisors, officials, employees, members and the general public.
  • Knowledge of safe use, mixing and application of chemicals and commercial products.
  • Knowledge of golf, golf rules and methods of play.
  • Ability to anticipate personnel, equipment, and material requirements related to golf course maintenance and repair assignments.
  • Ability and knowledge to lay out irrigation patterns, drainage patterns, construct tees and/or greens.

Other Qualifications

  • Requires an Associate’s degree or Certificate in Turf Management (or related field, like agronomy, horticulture, plant science, soil science)
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Golf Superintendent or 1st Assistant 
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Advance computer skills required for financial reporting and control of operations, including use of Microsoft Office Suite.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid NC state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • NC Pesticide Application License or the ability to obtain within six months.
  • Possess Wastewater Operator Certification or the ability to obtain within 1 year.
  • Preference given to those who have obtained the Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
  • Performs very heavy work that involves exerting more than 120 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, loading and unloading, moving, lifting, fabricating and installing very large or very heavy equipment.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
    • Electrical shock; Heights.
