Position Summary
We are looking for a full-time Senior Database Engineer (HBase) (Official title: Senior Database Engineer I) for our San Diego-based corporate office with the option to work fully-remote. The Senior Database Engineer will be responsible for leading the development and management of SHEIN's databases and distributed systems. This role centers on MySQL and other database technologies, reporting directly to the Head of Database and with regular updates to the CTO.
The ideal candidate will have experience managing large-scale, mission-critical environments that require zero downtime. As part of the SHEIN DBRE team, you will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of our database infrastructure through automation and scalable solutions. Our team integrates DBA, SRE, and DBRE expertise to deliver highly available data services.
We design resilient architectures to meet evolving business and data processing demands, prioritizing efficiency and system reliability. While each team member may have their preferred technologies, a deep understanding of database fundamentals—and how different database systems interact with applications and operating systems—is essential for success. This role requires collaboration across multiple customer environments and global teams.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operation and monitoring of mission-critical HBase clusters; participate in and improve on-call practices.
- Architect, plan, deploy, and scale large-scale HBase clusters with focus on reliability, security, and performance.
- Design and implement high availability, disaster recovery, backup, and capacity planning strategies.
- Lead performance optimization efforts across memory, GC tuning, region balancing, and data storage strategies (e.g., compression, hot/cold separation).
- Troubleshoot complex system-level issues, driving root cause analysis and long-term remediation.
- Provide technical leadership on schema design, query optimization, and best practices for HBase usage across the organization.
- Develop automation frameworks and monitoring enhancements to improve operational efficiency.
- Drive integration and optimization of HBase within the broader big data ecosystem (Hadoop, Hive, Spark, Kafka, Zookeeper, etc.).
- Mentor junior engineers and influence cross-team design decisions for large-scale distributed data systems.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- Proficiency in Java or Scala, with strong expertise in Linux systems and shell scripting; Python experience a plus.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems theory (CAP theorem, consensus protocols such as ZAB, Paxos, Raft).
- In-depth knowledge of HBase architecture, including storage internals, read/write paths, and compaction processes.
- Extensive experience in performance tuning for large-scale HBase deployments.
- Proven track record managing HBase clusters at hundreds of nodes and PB-scale data volumes.
- Hands-on experience with cloud-based HBase services (AWS EMR, GCP Dataproc, Azure HDInsight, etc.) is a plus.
- Familiarity with storage engines (RocksDB, LevelDB) or advanced HBase client optimization techniques is a strong plus.
- Strong leadership, cross-team collaboration, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated success in capacity planning, disaster recovery design, and scaling distributed systems.
