Job Summary:  

The Civil Intern supports the civil engineering team by assisting with design, drafting, analysis, and project documentation. This role provides hands-on learning opportunities in site development, infrastructure planning, and technical design under the supervision of licensed engineers. The Civil Intern gains exposure to industry practices while contributing to real project work in a collaborative environment. 

 

Primary Essential Functions:  

  • Assist in preparing engineering drawings, specifications, and reports.
  • Support calculations for grading, drainage, utilities, and site layouts.
  • Conduct research, collect data, and assist with fieldwork as needed.
  • Assist in reviewing project documents for accuracy and compliance.
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, and project staff to support project goals.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with clients and colleagues, including cross-functional teams, peers, direct reports, and leadership, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):  

 

Knowledge 

  • Foundational knowledge of civil engineering principles.
  • Awareness of site development, utilities, and transportation systems.
  • Familiarity with design software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar).

 

Skills 

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic drafting tools.
  • Effective written and verbal communication.

 

Abilities 

  • Ability to learn new tools and methods quickly.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage time effectively in a deadline-driven setting.

 

Qualifications:  

 

Required 

  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Strong academic performance in relevant coursework.
  • Basic proficiency with AutoCAD or similar software.

 

Preferred 

  • Previous internship or co-op experience in civil engineering.
  • Exposure to Civil 3D or other design software.
  • Involvement in engineering-related student organizations or competitions. 

 

Physical Requirements:  

  • Ability to remain seated for extended periods while working at a computer or attending meetings.
  • Frequent use of standard office equipment, including computers, keyboards, telephones, and printers.
  • Occasional light physical activity such as walking, standing, or carrying materials (up to 25 lbs.).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person, over the phone, and through written communication.
