About the Department
We have an exciting opportunity for three (3) Custodian positions located at our campus in Custodian, CA.
Current work schedules:
2 Night Positions: Sunday - Wednesday 9:00 pm - 6:30 am; 10:00 pm - 2:00 am Thursday |
1 Day Position: 6:00 am - 3:30 pm Monday -Thursday; 6:00 am - 10:00 am Friday |

Under the supervision of the Facilities Supervisor or designee, the Custodian performs custodial duties and maintain campus classrooms, offices and restrooms and related areas in a neat, clean and sanitary manner. The incumbent participates in light maintenance and the occasional moving of furniture/equipment; provides excellent customer service; establishes and maintains effective working relationships with associates; and, maintains the highest level of confidentiality with any student or school information acquired.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- This position serves District-Wide; applicants may be assigned to any district facility. Work hours and worksite locations are subject to change depending on department needs.
- A six-month probationary period must be successfully completed before the selected candidate is considered a permanent employee of the district.

Position Duties
- Set, re-set and monitor security alarm systems as assigned; lock and unlock classrooms, offices, and other key access points; respond to emergency situations according to established procedures
- Assist the team with the establishment of work schedules and methods for providing custodial services to the District; assure coverage of duties during assigned work hours
- Assist in and participate in training, assign and provide work direction and provide guidance to assigned personnel on cleaning techniques and the proper use of equipment; assure and awareness of all safety issues, promptly reporting areas of concern
- Assure proper care and use of equipment and materials; assure required supplies are available and equipment is in good working order; issue supplies to staff and assure proper storage
- Identify and report building maintenance problems; assure that work orders are prepared and completed; report unusual problems or difficulties to supervisor
- Identify special work projects; inspect work in progress and upon completion assure that work is performed in compliance with instructions, meeting quality standards
- Promptly remove graffiti; paint and provide touch-up as necessary
- Clean/disinfect restrooms; clean and replace trash liners, refill dispensers, dust and mop floors, wash mirrors and faucets, clean under sinks and wash restroom walls
- Vacuum, shampoo and remove stains from carpets
- Clean tabletops; windows; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; wash and spot clean walls, plumbing fixtures, window coverings, and related items
- Sweep patios, sidewalks, clean classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas
- Remove cobwebs, clean water fountains, change light bulbs
- Strip and wax floors, service gym floor
The incumbent must possess a thorough knowledge of:
- Cleaning methods, materials, chemicals and equipment specific to higher education institutions
- Safety and sanitation measures
- Effective leadership skills gained through successful experience, on-the-job training or formal training
The incumbent must possess the skills to:
- Use non-powered hand tools, ladders, buffers, floor cleaning machines, and special cleaning solvents
- Work effectively as a team member
- Meet schedules and timelines
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Maintain documentation and records
- Handle multiple assignments simultaneously and set priorities based on customer needs
The incumbent must possess the ability to:
- Perform heavy manual labor, including lifting over 30 pounds on a frequent basis
- Work in physically uncomfortable and unclean areas
- Learn schedules and special procedures
- Read, write and speak English sufficiently to carry out oral/written instructions, read/understand/follow label directions/warnings on cleaning supplies, and maintain records
- Work with minimal supervision throughout the assigned shift and cleaning area
- Observe and use safe working conditions
- Ability to provide on-the-job training
- Analyze situations and take effective actions
- Plan and organize work schedules
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those from a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A high school diploma or GED; AND
- Two (2) years of custodial/janitorial or building maintenance work experience; AND
- Read, write and speak English sufficiently to carry out oral/written instructions and to read/understand/follow directions, label warnings, etc.; AND
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 60-days of hire, a valid California driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the District.
- If selected, employment commencement is contingent upon successful enrollment in the District’s DMV Pull Program. Employees enrolled in the DMV Pull Program MUST continuously maintain a driving record that meets District requirements set forth in the current policy as it relates to allowable types of infractions and points.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Two (2) years of professional supervisory or lead experience
- Three (3) years of professional custodial or janitorial experience
- Custodial experience that includes minor building and equipment maintenance
- Professional experience working in an education setting (K-12, College, University, or private) utilizing cleaning equipment, materials, and methods specific to these institutions
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Environment: Work environment varies based on the demands and needs during each day which will include indoor and outdoor walking and standing. Sitting in an office or a meeting. Work is performed primarily indoors. May require travel from site to site and withstand constant exposure to year-round climate conditions. Walk the grounds on foot or with a District vehicle.
Physical: Primary function requires sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an indoor and outdoor setting and travel from site to site; to stand or sit for extended periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach and twist; to carry, push and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to lift or move 50 to 70 pounds frequently; and to verbally communicate to exchange information in person, via the radio and on the telephone.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
