Summary/Objective:

Responsible for implementing the facility’s direct care for children programs and providing an environment of consistent structure, guidance and nurturance in the residential facility.

  1. Directly supervise Direct Care Staff assigned to their team
  2. Develop & maintain weekly staff schedule for your shift
  3. Direct Care Supervisors must have Food Handlers/Managers certification
  4. Hiring Process
  •  Work with the Director of Shelter Operations in the interview and selection process of hiring Direct Care staff that will be working directly with the residents.
  •  Assist with initial training and orientation, semi-annual and annual training.
  •  Work with the Director of Shelter Operations in performing staff annual and 90 day reviews. 

3. Assign tasks and daily responsibilities to Direct Care Staff

  •  Develop break schedule
  •  Submit to Director of Shelter Operations any variation of hours worked by those on shift for ending payroll including Overtime
  •  Responsible for finding shift coverage if it is needed
  •  Work with Director of Shelter Operations on disciplinary actions. including coaching forms. Must submit coaching forms and update to Director of Shelter Operations on areas of discussion
  •  Assist in maintaining compliance with all applicable regulatory standards/requirements in collaboration with the Director of Shelter Operations.
  •  Conduct Licensing Standard household walkthroughs on a monthly basis
  •  Provide guidance, direction and modeling to Direct Care Staff in the implementation of a structured residential program for residents
  •  Set high standards of professional & personal conduct and competence for Direct Care Staff
  •  Communicate information through various means to the oncoming Shift Supervisors regarding issues that may impact their shift while working with the residents
  •  Distribute Medication (in case you are absent please have a designated person for backup)
  •  Ensure Significant Incident Reports (SIR’s) are completed by staff using computer based template as necessary
  •  Have a working knowledge, be able to perform and communicate to the Direct Care Staff the basic needs of the infants and children including, but not limited to feeding, bathing and toilet needs
  •  Complete after hours intake or discharge and ensure a backup on your team is also trained
  •  Communicate with Nutrition Services Manager regarding meal prep/prep daily.
  •  Plan daily activities for residents and submit and needs request for items.
  •  Provide daily shift updates
  •  Make a weekly household item needs list and provide to Director of Shelter Operations.

Essential Functions:

  •  Participate as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team to meet the physical, emotional, and social needs of the children, as outlined in each child’s plan of service
  •  Have a working knowledge of Trauma Informed Care, Normalcy, Compassion Fatigue & Self-Care
  •  Help provide an environment that is growth producing and which stimulates self-confidence, trust and felt safety
  •  Remain attentive to the physical, emotional, and academic growth of the children under their supervision
  •  Provide all basic needs to children such as, but not limited to, bathing, changing diapers, preparing meals, medical care, transportation, etc.
  •  Perform daily cleaning responsibilities of children’s living quarters, including laundry
  •  Report any needed repairs to Director of Shelter Operations.
  •  Audit medication and administration of prescription & non-prescription medication
  •  Potential contact with on-call medical staff may occur
  •  Be familiar with and complete Intake Process:
  • Maintain paperwork
  • Prepare hygiene boxes/welcome baskets
  • Provide nutrition if incoming clients are hungry
  • Provide clothing if needed
  • Bathe younger clients if needed
  •  Monitor children’s behaviors and location throughout the whole shift by using a 15 minute check system
  •  Prepare and adhere to safety plan of children
  •  Teach and support the learning of life skills
  •  Potentially handle high pressure situations, such as, but not limited to: self-harming behavior, runaways, police/ambulance matters, etc.
  •  Use de-escalation skills to ensure safety of all children and staff
  •  Work and communicate as a team member to meet physical, emotional and social needs of the children, as outlined in each child’s plan of service
  •  Provide an environment that promotes safety, trust, and self-confidence to ensure physical, emotional, and academic growth of the children
  •  Utilize a trauma-informed approach to improve children’s self-worth, learn effective problem-solving skills and self-regulation skills
  • Facilitate an environment that encourages children to practice resolving problems
  • Provide opportunities to set individual and group goals
  • Facilitate discussions that encourage children to take part in group activities
  • Provide continual recognition of children’s strengths and gradual success
  •  Maintain an awareness of the needs of children, be attentive and flexible as changes occur in the program
  • Communicate information through various means to the other Direct Care Specialists regarding issues that may impact their shifts while working with the children
  • Work collaboratively with Case Managers and Program Staff
  • Provide transportation to children as needed
  •  Report suspected child abuse/neglect of a child immediately
  •  Participate in training, staff meetings and supervisory conferences to develop and enhance trauma-informed skills
  •  Maintain client records, daily report sheets and serious incident reports as necessary
  •  Emphasize safety to minimize potential injuries
  •  Perform other assignments and duties as requested

Requirements

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

  •  High School Degree or equivalent is required; some college or college degree is preferred
  •  Age 21 or older to meet the needs for the vehicle insurance
  •  Minimum of one year of experience working with children in a therapeutic/residential setting or related experience
  •  Valid Texas driver’s license with insurance and provide DPS proof of driving record acceptable to agency insurers for the past three (3) years
  •  Must submit to pre-employment drug screen as well as random drug screens when directed
  •  Provide a required TB test, within last 60 days, showing employee is free of contagious TB
  •  Submit to a criminal background check, FBI background check, and Texas HHS background check as required by regulatory agencies
  •  Possess knowledge of issues related to child development, trauma, youth homelessness, abuse and neglect with at-risk children
  •  Effective communication skills, both oral and written; Effective organizational skills; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the community, as well as volunteers
  •  Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision
  •  CPR, First Aid and Emergency Behavior Intervention certification must be current, or obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained as required by regulatory standards
  •  Sufficient good health to properly perform duties

General Agency Requirements:

  •  Immediately report any suspected abuse/neglect of a child
  •  Maintain Licensing credentials as required and attend agency training as needed
  •  Set high standard of professional, technical, personal conduct and competence for team
  •  Emphasize safety to keep employee injury to a minimum
  •  Minimum physical requirements
  • Ability to use up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force continuously to move objects and/or people
  • Good depth perception
  • Ability to bend, stoop, twist, turn, reach, lift, carry, pull, climb and kneel with approximately 50% of time spent walking or standing
  • Ability to recognize differences in sound, such as voices/noises that are loud and playful instead of angry and combative; in addition to differentiating tone and volumes in conversation
  •  Knowledge and use of Universal Precautions
