Recycling and Trash Operator bei City of Wilmington, NC

About the Department

This position plays a vital role in maintaining public health and cleanliness by operating commercial sanitation trucks on daily collection routes throughout the community.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

• Operate a CDL-required trash or recycling packer truck to collect household waste, recyclables, vegetative debris, bulky items, and more

• Use mechanical equipment (e.g., cart tippers, packing system, ejection system) to safely dispose of materials at appropriate sites

• Pick up and transport bulky items such as furniture, scrap metal, construction debris, and electronics

• Remove roadkill and deliver, repair, or replace trash and recycling carts

• Perform daily vehicle inspections (pre-trip and post-trip) and ensure the truck is clean and well-maintained

• Occasionally assist by working on the rear of the truck with other team members
  
  

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Support cleanup and sanitation needs at City-sponsored festivals, events, and community cleanups
  
  

• Work is assigned daily and may vary based on route needs and weather conditions
  
  

• Expected to work most City holidays and may be required to work before, during, and after inclement weather or natural disaster events (essential position)

Position Duties

• Safely navigating assigned routes and operating sanitation equipment

• Ensuring safety of all crew members during operations

• Collecting and disposing of various waste types and recyclables

• Verifying service requests and delivering or removing carts as needed by work order

• Assisting other team members at the rear of the truck

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent and one year of relative experience in truck driving/operating or trash collection.
• Possession of, or the ability to obtain, Class B CDL within 120 days of hire.
• Ability to obtain a FEMA - NIMS 100 and 700 certifications through independent study courses within 90 days of hire.
• Basic computer skills are required for online training and daily work interactions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
All candidates must be able to push and pull over 100 lbs. occasionally, lift and carry 50-100 lbs. frequently, and lift or carry 20-50 lbs. constantly. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position generally works in a vehicle but is also required to work outdoors.
