About the Department

The Engineering Intern will play a meaningful role in shaping Butte’s public infrastructure by supporting the operation, maintenance, and expansion of municipal water, sanitary, and storm sewer systems, as well as assisting with road construction and maintenance projects. This hands-on opportunity offers mentorship from experienced professionals in various roles, gain exposure to real-world tools and practices, and the chance to contribute to projects that directly impact the local community. The Public Works Intern will support Public Works staff by conducting various tasks associated with infrastructure projects. Work duties will be a mixture of field and office work. The work will be performed under the direction of the Public Works Director and other staff. The Public Works Intern must demonstrate the ability to work independently in the absence of direct supervision. The nature of the work performed requires the employee to learn and apply local, state, and federal codes and regulations relating to sanitary systems, storm water, roads, and sidewalks. The Public Works Intern must maintain cooperative working relationships with City-County department heads, employees, other government agencies, engineering consultants, contractors, and the general public.


Wage: $15.00 per hour


Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 4 to 20 hours per week during school term and 20 to 40 hours per week during winter and summer breaks.


Start Date: September 2025

End Date: April 30, 2026

Position Duties

•Maintains accurate records and maps of public works facilities.
•Assist in reviewing subdivision, site, and construction plans.
•Obtains field information using various instruments and report findings.
•Monitors and inspects construction activities to ensure conformance with safety and quality specifications. 
•Assists with reviews of contractors’ right-of-way applications.
•Conducts site visits with Public Works staff, obtains and records information, prepares reports.
•Completes all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound manner.  Specifically, complying with the Health & Safety Program; maintaining work areas in a safe and orderly manner; identifying and reporting unsafe conditions; reporting all accidents; wearing required personal protective equipment; and attending safety-related meetings, training sessions, fit testing, etc.
•Performs all duties and work assignments in compliance with project quality requirements.
•Acts responsibly and ethically, and in conformance with generally accepted business, occupational, and professional standards.
•Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

•Training in and working knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and standards and municipal code.
•Training and hands-on experience in AutoCAD and Esri Software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, GIS field data collection)
•Knowledge of Microsoft Office Software.
•Ability to make decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
•Ability to accurately record information and upload to appropriate systems.
•Ability to independently solve problems within assigned areas of responsibility.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county employees, supervisory personnel, contractors, engineering consultants and the general public.
•Ability to communicate well with others, both orally and in writing.

Acceptable Experience and Training

•Enrollment in a two-year or four-year accredited program in civil engineering technology, construction management, surveying, GIS or a closely related field; AND 
•Some applicable field experience in civil engineering, construction, surveying, GIS, or related field; OR, 
•Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Required Special Qualifications

•Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Montana
•Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment according to Butte-Silver Bow Ordinance.  See below.
“2.08.010 Residence during employment. From and after October 1, 1979, all employees of the local government of Butte-Silver Bow shall be bona fide residents within the boundaries of Butte-Silver Bow during the period of their employment by the government of Butte-Silver Bow. (Ord. 85 § 1, 1979)”

Essential Physical Abilities

•Clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate well with City-County department and division heads, employees, contractors, developers, regulatory agencies, engineering consultants and the general public.
•Sufficient vision, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of technical drawings and related materials.

•Ability to lift and handle field instruments weighing up to 50 lbs.
•Personal mobility, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to visit and inspect City-County construction sites and conduct field work.
