About the Department
Travels throughout the City conducting on-site inspections of property to determine conformity with the City Code and Zoning Ordinance. Initiates compliance actions, maintains records, prepares reports, reviews plans and testifies or represents the City in court as necessary.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Receives complaints regarding violations of the City Code and Zoning Ordinance, investigates and determines the proper course of action to be taken including, issuing violation notices, citations and obtaining court orders.
- Explains the City Code and Zoning Ordinance requirements, answers questions and provides assistance in correcting code and ordinance violations.
- Enforces the City Code and Zoning Ordinance regarding matters such as unsafe buildings, blight, junk vehicles, noxious weeds, trash and garbage, property maintenance, swimming pools, outside storage, and placement and size regulations of accessory buildings and signs. Also reviews home occupations, temporary signs and child day care registration requests.
- Issues ordinance violation notices and processes civil infraction citations and misdemeanor tickets through the District Count. Testifies in court or other judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings regarding violations and complaints. Prepares motions and court orders to enforce code compliance.
- Assists property owners, architects, builders and others with construction plans as they pertain to zoning requirements.
- Assists property owners with requests for Zoning Ordinance variances, exceptions and special approvals for processing through the Zoning Board of Appeals.
- Compiles and maintains accurate records as required by the state record retention schedule of inspections, enforcement proceedings, and permit and review procedure. Maintains inspection status of code violations through the enforcement tracking system
- Assists with the research of ordinance amendments and other topics for the consideration of the Planning Commission and the City Council
- Cooperates with other Departments of the City to achieve compliance with the City Code and Zoning Ordinance
- Serves as substitute liaison to Zoning Board of Appeals for the purpose of presenting cases for appeal and processing.
- Performs a variety of office tasks. Enters data, prepares correspondence, answers phones, files, schedules inspections, and other office duties.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Associate’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and related work experience necessary; Bachelor’s degree in related field desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to stand, sit, walk, talk, use hands and fingers; to handle or operate objects, tools and to reach with hands and arms above head to remove objects. The employee is required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 30 pounds and must have the ability to tolerate heights.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
